Hi, anybody out there could reccomend who provides a service to "upgrade the gearbox cover to seals"? I found Fair Spares & Alternative Motorcycle Repair so far. Prefer somewhere in the USA. Links or e-mail appreciated. Thank you for your reply's.

I had Phil at Fair Spares do it for me, nice job, quick response. He did the tach o-ring mod for me at the same time and sent me spare gaskets too (not included in the machining price). I think Phil is a good guy.

Norton Gearbox Cover Seal Upgrade (2010)

jezuz it took longer to put these pics on the forum that to do the job on the lathe I am useless with a PC
How can I get the whole pic in .I know LAB says not to go bigger than 800x600 but how?

To machine them on the lathe I put a big wooden plate on the mandrell, turn it flat ,fix a bit of wood on it in approx the middle with a woodscrew ,turn this exactly to the diameter of the kickstart, slde your cover over the now fitting bit of wood (pic1),turn to dia of you seal (pic1 also )and DONE

All royalties payable in single malt please

If you look at the image on your Photobucket page, you'll see 'edit' - click on there and then on 'resize' - you can enter whatever image size you wish.

Don't thank me. A crate of Witkap will do fine

Completely brilliant.

Although this is a good thing to do, it's a little overkill. You can get a seal that will fit into the o-ring groove. Look to your local o-ring/oil seal dealer and ask for a "9815" seal. The dimensions are 1id x 1.125 od x .125 width (just like the oring). The trick with this, which is far less invasive than the alternative, is to heat the housing around the kickshaft bushing and pop the bushing out. I laid a few drops of Red Loctite in the seal/oring shoulder and dropped in the seal. Then chill the bushing to replace as to not disturb the seal. Vwa-la.
Due to the fluid level and the fact that I have never seen dripping from the shifter shaft, I left well enough alone. The $.75 oring swaps out with no trouble at all. However there is a seal that will fit that also(6152).
This is good alternative upgrade that anyone can do and will cost around $6.00.

+1! I've done this many times. I've also used quad rings with a smear of RTV silicone on the outsde successfully.

The tranny on my 74 850 was leaking at the kickstart. Leo Goff at Memphis Motor Werks did the seal upgrade for me. Leo is a well known master machinist and second to none when it comes to Norton knowledge. Removing and re-installing the cover is easy. Send it to Leo, you won't be dissapointed.

What is the tach O ring mod? I'm leaking oil from around the tach nut where it mounts to the fitting on the engine.

I guess Phil did the same thing as the OB mod.

Wow, cheapest fix ever! This forum is great. My o-ring started leaking so I picked up SKF-9815 for $3.80. Ninety minutes later and I'm riding without a drop leaking from the kickshaft.

What's the red stuff?
Don't say blood.

The kickstart leak fix that worked for me was to replace the original O ring with a metric one: 25mm x 4mm. No loctite required.

the 25mm x 4mm O'ring is probably a good option, over the yars I have machined quite a few covers for shift and kicker seals, definitely fixes the problem and not a big job, I notice the parts guys now a supplying X rings instead of O'rings not sure that they would be a big improvement, I actually fitted a pair to my current resto just to see how they go.
