Hi all, I'm new here so try not to be too harsh yet. There are some gorgeous Commandos here and I am a lifelong fan so hoping others here can help.
I have a '72 750 Roadster, built up from a rough ex-police bike about 17 years ago. All has been well and mostly trouble free but I now find myself hankering for a Fastback and so have bought the major parts to convert. However, the tailpiece confuses me. I guess it should be connected to the rear frame loop and there is a stud and a threaded hole right at that point. I did find a pic of the 'correct' bracket but can't find it now and could not see how it would work anyway.
So, bottom line is it would be great if a Fastback owner could post a couple of good close-up pics of that area so I can see how the tailpiece attaches to the frame and how the mudguard attaches (same area) Also, is the number plate connected to anything other than the two bolts at the taillamp unit? Seems a bit floppy and likely to fail.
Cheers, Martin

Thanks for replies, I'm in the UK but not aware of any Fastbacks near me.
Yes, I am a 'Mustang guy' how did you guess
I will try searching here, have been spending much time generally on the web but not found what I need hence my questions here, it seems quite busy so am hopeful. This Fastback is going to be red metalflake after build/shakedown, saw a thread here about metalflake so I know I'm not the only one........

3 years ago I did exactly what you are doing - converted my black roadster to a BRG fastback. So I recognize the questions! :) I am not where the motorcycle is at the moment but will be this coming Sunday eve. If you haven't received what you need by then, I can take pics/provide comments sometime Monday.

Ironically, I am planning to convert my fastback back into a roadster. I love the fastback look but, heck it's BEEN a FB for three years now and it's time for a different look. It will be a red roadster...

That's the part I saw, but what about item 23? Just a rubber cushion?. I was looking for two fasteners, as the Roadster has but it now looks like the FB only uses one fastening point. I am not a stickler for originality if it can be improved without visual impact, I just wanted to know how it would have been from the factory.
Mike996 - I would be grateful if you could post some pics please. You know the area I'm interested in! Did you connect your number plate to the rear mudguard or frame?
Cheers, Martin

The fiberglass tail piece has three mounting points. Along with brackt #16 at the rear, the front tabs right and left attach at the top shock mounting bolts. I converted my '72 roadster several years ago to fastback then decided the roadster style was more to my taste so went back.

Yes, just a strip of rubber also used under the rear mudguard "clip" (Item 4).

Ah yes, I already have the front mounts covered, I am only trying to find out about the rear mount and it's role in securing the rear section of the mudguard to the frame. I'll make a stainless #16 bracket and maybe also upgrade it at the same time for greater strength.
All replies appreciated!
Thanks, Martin

Thanks L.A.B., that's the bracket I found on the web recently, now I have a good pic I can easily make a replica in SS, thanks for that. This is a great forum!

"Did you connect your number plate to the rear mudguard or frame?"

The number plate connects to the mudguard (one fastener) and the tailpiece (two fasteners)

Ooh! If you are able to get a good pic of that arrangement for me I think that will be the final piece of the jigsaw. TIA
