Non-US minimum wage + healthcare

Since Keating removed import tariffs in Australia, most of our manufacturing industry has moved offshore. So there are not many lower-grade jobs for our kids. Our government is responding by placing harsher restrictions on welfare payments which include a requirement of making many more job applications for jobs which don't exist. The worst aspect is that Australia (and probably America) compete with one hand tied. In about 1992, there was a proposal to introduce an international standard for OHS certifications - it was defeated by the US lobby groups through ANSI. What it means is that the Chinese and Indians can operate with filthy polluting workplaces - in Australia we are regimented and that is one of the reasons our businesses move offshore. These days we can only hope to compete by moving up-market to when prices more than justify our overheads (which include our educated workforce).
This stuff is all part of the race to the bottom -neoliberalism has us stuffed.
