I have tinnitus - don't need a bike to hear ringing .

Yup, 25+ years of computer hard drives landed me a nasty case of Tinnitus. Can't remember what quiet sounded like.

The ring tones seem to land in the range women use for consonants, such as hat cat that flat etc, so we have to go HuH more than otherwise. Its takes yogi's years to hear the inner sounds but with a lot more boring way than most of us acquired it. I don't seem to notice it while riding on a Commando.

Toppy, that makes sense, and yes, I always ride about with foam earplugs scrunched -up and jammed into my ears before any outing. Has anyone tried newer noise cancelling technology earplugs where there is a micro-delay that picks up the offending noise , processes that ultra-fast, then delivers silence to brain ? Studying relationships of noise to stress levels too, seems those who deal with noise can arrive fresher than those who tough it out.

Thinking of lining the underside of gastank with whatever ? -material ,(not water absorbent) ,to help deaden valve-tick noise. A mini-mid-winter project.
If your valves are making that much noise there could be something wrong. When you check your clearances with a feeler gauge it doesn't take into account the crater you may have on the valve. I checked once, first with feeler gauge then a dial indicator. There was a 3 thou difference. Dial indicator and stand for less than $50.

Sound is a wave. What these things do is send to your ear ambient sounds delayed so they're out of phase. They cancel each other out, equaling quiet.

You might check the tappets hot and bring them in a thou or two if applicable.
Add a shim to the PRV to bring more oil to the valve train.

I am a good candidate for the molded ear suppositories. I have narrow ear canals and anything off the shelf will not work. It's a pain trying to roll them foam plugs up so small to fit. I have oily hands and collect dirt by waving them in the air, so whan rolling them they become dirty insantly. Then when the expand it gets super quiet but also a little too painful.
