Exchanged my 2016 961 Norton for the new TVS 961 last year and everything pretty good, had first service all good but what annoys me with it is the constant crackling from the exhaust on the over run and bare in mind the exhaust note is loud. Contacted Norton to see if they do a re map to eliminate the crackling from the exhaust note only to be told no, it was done that way to get it through the emissions. Sounds to me it’s over fuelling. Come on Norton don’t be so rigid. Prefferd my old set up with long opens on standard map setting.

If the exhaust is popping, it's probably lean.
Norton would want emissions as low as possible to pass regulation.

From the Motorcycle Single Vehicle Approval (msva) test manual, that currently every single Norton has to go through to get road registered, as they don't currently have a homologated motorcycle in their current range.

Yes, but obviously for some reason Norton don't want to resolve the owner's issue.
But, why would that be? Surely, owner satisfaction is high on Dr. Bob's priority list.
A "lean" tune could be an attempt to avoid excess fuel collecting on the cats, that could cause them to overheat, crack, and block the exhaust.
And the TVS 961s have rather large cats compared to the Donnies.

Curiously, I own a 2001 Triumph SpeedTwin which also pops on decel. When I had my first service done at the dealer I asked them to check the EFI. The dealer told me that the EFI was fine as set, and that the popping was normal. I asked how I can eliminate the popping, and he told me to download and install a TuneECU for the Speed Twin. I asked him if he could do this for me, and he said no, not until the warranty is up. Apparently, a TuneECU can alter the fueling in the EFI map, eliminate the popping, but in some circumstances also overheat the cats, and cause damage. Dealers will not take the chance of performing the installation due to the liability if something goes wrong. So, my ST still pops.

I wonder if this is Norton's thinking too?

The cat is the same part that we used at Donington, on the euro 4 bikes.
The popping and cackling on the overrun is favoured more than disliked, so I doubt anything would be done to reduce it.
I'd suspect conservative ignition timing to be more the cause, to account for running poor quality fuel, instead of just assuming everyone will run with super.

I quite like the unruly nature of my new 961 and woudn't want to change it. If I want smooth I ride my ZZR1400.....

If only they made a Euro5 ZZR1400  Of all my bikes the best by far was mine, I owned 3 of them.

+1 Must admit I am of the same opinion as DD, it's nine months since I picked up my TVS Sport and those silencers are starting to aggravate me somewhat. That flat monotonous NOISE and the poppin and a farting on the overrun , some people seem to like or accept that but not me I'm afraid. After eight years of listening to that lovely drone of a cat-less straight through system with long pipes and the music on the overrun, reminiscent of any old Brit bike twin or single I find the stubbies just emit a loud noise and a flat boring one at that and just plain annoying to other people especially in a queue of traffic. In all those eight year not once did I dislike the lovely 'burble' of my old system. The only good thing I can say about the new Sport is that it does sound great when short shifting up the box, reminds be about the film "Bullit".
So having thought a lot about this, unfortunately it keeps coming back to the same Elephant in the room, should I put my old peashooters back on (what about the ECU) , could I gut the old silencers to make them straight through again (what about the ECU), how about putting DB killers in the stubbies ( etc ). It's blatantly obvious that TVS can't or wont give ANY info out to us plebs especially while it is still under warranty and even then zero chance later on. I don't know if you have noticed but they are becoming like the 'Arthur Daley' of bike sales, once the bike is sold,
down come the shutters and off go the lights and there off down the pub.
I just have to admit that there is just not enough info out there at the moment about the TVS ECU set up, whether some clever individual will come forward and be the 'Messiah' only time will tell, but here's keeping my fingers crossed. .

P.S. Bike running great no probs so far, 12 ml of oil in 450 miles which I think is acceptable compared to my Donny bike , 0n a run 55mpg at a steady 70-75 and 60mpg once on the A roads in Wales probably due to all the 20mph limits.👍

That's not been my experience. I bought my 961 direct from the factory as I live in Birmingham and the guys in Solihull have been very helpful dealing with the few minor issues I've had. I'm not surprised they are not engaging with your request for help in modifying your bike. What manufacturer would do that ?

I had the Thiel short pipes, they came with removable DB killers that made a big difference. He also does long ones which might be more to your liking…

That's very handy you can just nip down to the factory for a chat, many other buyers haven't got that luxury and if you don't believe me look at the story of the guy on the NOC who came within a whisker of rejecting a brand new bike which he might still do because of the hassle he got from TVS.

The tvs ecu is identical to the euro 4 Omex ecu used by Donington, albeit with an altered gin and calibration file. The wiring harness is also identical to the euro 4 Donington bikes. I currently have a customer riding around on his 2018 Donington bike, running my spare Solihull ecu.....so you could also drop a Donington ecu into a brummy built 961 and run the Donington calibration files.

I know of two people who are going through that process....and tbh it's not so much the bike thats been the concern, but the aftersales support from the dealers that getting people's backs up.
