Where did you find the exploded parts diagram? I wish that Norton would have had such pictures in their parts books back in the day.

Any one have any clue what spanner this might be? Looks so so short. I'd love to have this for this specific bolt on my mag !!

I believe it is a 1/4" W same as a 7/16 " American. On occasion I have found a extended nut that is wasted so it will clear the case joint. Getting to that bottom bolt is a B***h.
As you can see the oil pipes have been removed to allow access.
 
Yes a BSA part and 3/16 W spanner.

This spanner has been slimmed down especially for this job.

Houston, we have a problem, or so I think. I got the thrust washed in from Jim Noll at BBC and using the parts illustration I installed it under cam gear.
I don't have a shop book for that year and model. I think I will check and see if the National Motorcycle Museum in Burmingham has one. They have most if not all of the BMS books. Generator model Nortons are a bit think on the ground here.
AS it is when I got everything assembled per the illustration and tightened down the cam nut it locks up. So, something isn't right.

Do you have the Mick Hemmings Norton Engine DVD ?
 
So, while I'm waiting on the DVD, shop and parts book for the 56 Domi to arrive I did some reading. First was the original repair manual that covers 58 and later, then the Haynes manual that covers 58 on Dominators, then I looked at my Haynes manual for Commandos. The first two made no mention about the shim, the Commando one did. But as I remember the spacer on the Commandos was for the tach drive to keep the cam centered and was considerably thicker than 1/32".
I think I will remove the timing gears and then just reassemble the gear spring and shim on the cam shaft. If that binds up I will remove the shim and see if that helps. I'm in no big rush and I want to make sure this is done correctly.
 
Well things are getting more and more interesting. I found the correct woodruff key for the cam on my Dominator project.
It fits the cam with no problems, but it is too big to fit into the cam gear/sprocket. I am thinking that sometime after 56 Norton changed the size of the key. I have a friend who is a machinist who can machine off a little on each side of the key. Anyone have information of the cam/gear/key thing?
 
Have you checked to see if the woodruff key fits another assembly like the drive side engine sprocket or rotor? Can’t remember the relative size of either to the cam sprocket key. Trial fit using heat?
 
I used a later Norton parts book and RGM's web site to ID the woodruff key. The 56 Model 88's have a dynamo or as we say a generator. The cam sprocket has a gear attached to it to drive the dynamo. The key fits the cam that came with the project but not the sprocket/gear. So, something has changed, and I don't have an earlier Norton parts book. I have one coming by slow boat from NZ.
