I'm going to buy new mufflers. The ones I have are in good condition but the chrome is bad. They're a seamless style and I really like that, and they have internal baffles so they're nice and quiet. I actually like them very much but the chrome is shot.

So I'm wondering what to buy and would like some opinions. The Andover Norton ones look and sound good but I'd really prefer seamless. One of the guys on our New Year's Day ride had a set of Emgos (the cheap ones you see on all the ebay bikes). They looked good but were way too loud for my taste. The guys in our club like the Epco stainless ones but they're too loud and too expensive. And they seem to have a problem with cracking. A set of Vikings might be nice but only if I won the lottery.

Seems like there's a lot of options - Togas, Wassels, the Andover Norton ones (made by ???), the noisy Emgos, the expen$ive stainless ones... I'd just buy another set of what I have now but I have no idea what they are! They are utterly devoid of markings.

I'm assuming of course, that rechroming would be too expensive to be worth considering...

thanks,
Debby

British Sapres NZ sell some nice ones Debby. Reasonable price also, but you may be able to get the same ones in the States for around the same price.

Have you worked out the crank problem by now ?

You seem to be really spending some time & money on this bike nowadays. You had better keep it & get all the enjoyment from riding it when you get it all back together!

My wife & I are thinking of taking off around Australia soon, but it would be nice to fly over to the your country & have a look around instead. I would love to see Matts Colorado Norton Works near you.

Can you tell me how much the bus fare is from LA to Colorad Norton Works please ? Then how much from CNW to Flint, Michigan ? We could go visit norbsa##### for a week or so :)

Nortonfan:

www.greyhound.com will get you the national bus company.

CNW is listed in Dolores Co. There appears to be no bus service there. I think it is close to Colorado Springs, but not sure.

Here's a thought. Kenny Dreer's new Norton Company is in Oregon.
Maybe catch a flight or bus to Portland, get over to Gladstone and check it out.
Bus from there to Colorado, then to Flint.
The bus ride from Oregon to Colorado is probably more scenic than the ride from Cal. to Col. A lot of desert.
The ride from LA to Oregon would also be nice and picturesque.

Just a thought.

Debbie, I guess it is a personal preference. I have had two sets of the factory muffs with the script on them and was told they were made by Toga. The welded seam is done so cleanly I find it not offensive.
These muffs setting next to two sets of seamless muffs I have just look crisper and cleaner. Maybe my seamless muffs aren't that good.
Until I see something better, I prefer the Togas.

Thanks Mike, I will check out the greyhound site. I reckon if we go by bus we will both see the countryside as we travel.

Reg, sent you a PM about travel.

I'm not a big fan of the 'hound, but you would see a lot of the country. You might meet some colorful and unusual people too

Being the pampered little brat that I am, I'd prefer to fly around the country and rent cars as needed. LA to Oregon is 800 miles or so. Oregon to Colorado is around 1000 miles, as is Colorado to Michigan. That's a lot of hours on the bus, and a lot of grimy bus terminals visited in the middle of the night. Not my cup of tea, but if you're the adventurous sort you might like it.

Dolores is in the extreme SW corner of Colorado. According to mapquest.com it's 366 miles from Colorado Springs. Add about another 60 miles to Denver. A good day's drive, particularly if you hit some winter weather. It's really out in the middle of nowhere so you'd have a pretty hard time finding a bus that goes there. Closest major town is Durango.

Be sure to stop by Boulder when you hit Colorado! :D

CNW are between Dolores and Cortez, slightly out of town.

I was lucky enough to spend a couple of weeks over that way in '04, mainly Arizona but managed to sneak into CNW on our tour about, and spent a little money - couldn't resist. Matt had recommended checking with him close to the time to make sure he wasn't going to be out of town.

In that part of the world you just gotta drive (or better yet ride) some of it - there is so much to see - Mesa Verde, Monument Valley, Grand Canyon...... and its worth being able to stop and admire the view. Being from Aus you shouldn't be scared of a few miles?

Debby, usually the problem with rechrome isn't the cost, it's finding a plating shop that will touch used bike mufflers. The deposits inside them will screw up the plating baths, and possibly ruin your chrome job at the same time. If you can find a way to clean them out, they might plate them. Check with them and they may know how to clean 'em.
If you buy new, you might consider taking them to a plate shop for their evaluation of the factory chrome. There are several ways for the manufacturer to do cheap chrome on a good part. Done properly, it should last as long, (or longer!) than the steel part. You can have them redo it. (Several ways are possible). You could do it in hard chrome and Black chrome, too. (do the pipes at the same time)

seamless reverse cone mufflers

Hi Debby,

I bought my seamless mufflers from Phil at Fair Spares America. They're pretty much blown out now after 8 years and 15,000 miles. No baffles, just straight through glass packs. The chrome is still great, but they're getting a bit load. The website is for others. I know you are acquainted with Phil already.

I'm thinking about having some stuff re-chromed (not exhaust) on the 71 basketcase: do you folks have anyone in particular that you've used/reccommend? in particular, my footpegs are pretty rusted/scuffed and I have a set of NOS wm3 rims should get re-done

whaddya think the cost for something like that would be? (sorry for being a little off topic) .

thanks

Karl Hoyt

Debby, Togas are distributed through Norman Hyde. I just checked his web site and noticed they make the traditional and seamless in 1 3/8 and 1 1/2. I think they were 81.53 lbs. sterling ea.

Update, I was just cruising Old Britts website and hit some link that listed all their mufflers and they stock Togas in seamless, cost 105.00. They also apparently stock the muffs with the Norton script, 120 something.

Good Luck!!!

Try Armours exhausts in UK, they do great quality exhausts particularly stainless steel, well finished heavy gayge metal last forever. Dont use stainless on downpipes though, vibration will cause them to crack up in a few thousand miles

Any new best peashooters opinions? I've got an internal tube broken free in one of my current ones, rattling. I have no idea what brand they are, I've been pleased with the quality.
What's the likely best replacement?

A recent newsletter from Andover Norton discussed a new seamless muffler they offer with the Norton script and
with baffling that greatly reduces the noise level of their preciously offered pea shooter with no baffling and a lot
of noise.

Wow, one of my ancient threads came back to life. It's like going back in time!

I ended up buying the Wassels and they are still in service, currently on my 850, but I don't think they are available any more. I did a quick search to see what's out there these days and it looks like the current choices are AN or EMGO. I do have a set of the EMGO Dunstall replicas and they have held up ok too.

Just fitted Armour pipes & peashooter. Onto mine.... they fitted really easily and look the dogs B******s
Just nipped everything up, placed a spirit level across the silencers... perfectly level and no "adjustment" required
My only beef & I believe all makers are the same, is that the head of the pipes differs in design from OE so the result is that the pipes don't fit snug against the lower frame tubes
I'll post some photos tomorrow
BTW Armour silencers are seamless

3 of 4 of the Togas I had did this. Have a welder unzip the pipe at the shoulder to the header, then the core will fall out and they can weld it back up with it out for a quick keep it running fix.

I bought a set of Commando Specialties (Emgo?) seamless peashooters a few years ago. The inlet pipe cracked off after about 700 miles.

I’m trying to narrow the list.
I want the straight through pipe with can-opener louvres, no stainless (visual reasons). Ground
smooth vs visual weld seams at the cone doesn’t matter to me.

These look good to me. Can anyone I.D. the brand? I’ll ship them in from U.K. if need be, but if they are stocked in the US somewhere, that would be easier.

Can you confirm that Armours silencers have the flutes inside ?
I am thinking about getting their pipes an having read the wedsite it is not clear (to me at least) what is in the silencer.
