NEW NORTON ATLAS MOTORCYCLE

If the Norton 650 is light enough with 75hp at the rear wheel , could it out perform the 961 ?

They’re claiming 84bhp and 178kg.

So, that’s a few more horses than they claim for the 961 and way more than 100lbs lighter than the 961.

It’ll out perform the 961 comfortably if these figures are close to the truth.

When you look at the profit per bike, then he is still not going to do it no matter how good they are.
As for Triumph taking a stake, if it was in their interest they would have made it clear by now. Why would they want a part they would want it all.

Yeah but somewhere I seen someone mention the Atlas being compared to the Ducati monster. Lmfao. Yeah. Ok.

Speaking of triumph, hear about the new thruxton RS coming?

These bikes MUST be a successful or the company could be in trouble I guess. SG and his team have done amazingly well but I wonder whether Triumph taking a stake would be a good/great idea
A reincarnation of NVT, are you sure?

Triumph buy a stake in Norton.!? Next thing you know, your ‘British’ icon will be made in Thailand... o_O

Triumphs only interest in Norton would be buying it ti stop someone else making a success of it and taking their sales. At the moment I assume Triumph are very happy with Norton where it is.

But how much does it really weigh ? I take a wild guess and say closer to 50 lbs less .

We can only take wild guesses Tony. But the 961 is a very heavy bike for what it is. I would be quite confident in betting the 650s will be 100lbs lighter in real terms if they could be weighed back to back.

But we’ll have to wait until the 650s are in the dealers to find out...

That is assuming the 650s ever actually get into the dealers...

And that is assuming you actually have some dealers...

We do know actually, engine from Zongshen, pressed and some other parts from Kinetic Engineering India who have already supplied NMUK, so not really a British icon.
Be realistic, it just is not possible to build a truly British bike, some steel and other alloys are just not smelted in the UK, and even then some manufactured parts will need to be made overseas.
I don't care where it's made, assembled etc. as long as the quality is there and the bike is worthy of the name, that'll do for me.

Each to their own of course, but I do care where it’s made. If I buy a Norton I want it to be a British bike, which it wouldn’t be if was built abroad. Of course some parts are shipped in & that’s fine. But for me it needs to be built in the UK.

Exactly the same feeling on this. We accept/welcome the brembo brakes and ohlin shocks but wish the remaining components to be high UK % which they have been, 84% if I am correct. Hand assembled in the UK. I commend SG and his team for doing this, shame the classic boys don't.

I so hope Norton make a success of things, my comment on Triumph taking a stake hopefully won't come to pass. If it does, I hope it will be a good collaboration and not a shifting of production to produce the lowest costs and just trade off the brand name.

Over 95% British made at ANIL, I bet some will be surprised at that. With sage it is easy to quickly see the percentage. It is an often asked question.
Triumph will find it hard to gain a stake in Norton. I don't foresee any tie up there, it is also not in Triumphs interest, what would Norton provide them with that they don't already have.

Well in the highly unlikely event that they did tie up Norton could provide them with a great looking bike which is hands down, better looking than anything the modern Triumph factory has ever produced.
Then again as a T160 owner I would say that wouldn't I. ;-)

Me three, really hope Norton remain independent. Not being built in the UK would have been a deal breaker for me.

Madnorton, ‘ANIL?’ and ‘Sage’?

Steve

Sam, sorry but I beg to differ..

Nice bike but in all honesty that could be made by any Japanese manufacturer & it would look much the same. The reason we love our Nortons, faults & all, is because they are different.!

Deano, this has nothing to do with Norton's which I agree are beautiful. My point was that the modern Triumph factory can and have produced stunning bikes. And again I beg to differ but a Japanese factory has never produced anything as nice looking as this.

How much do you think a 961 Commando and 961 Dominator weigh wet?
