New Norton 650 Superlight

well done on your purchase mate , the bike looks the nuts

Congrats on the new machine !!
Is it only available in Carbon or are there any other options? Carbon looks fantasic but I'm just curious.

Great value for money alternative to the V4 I’d say , Is it overall similar size wise to the V4 ? ,& when u have ur build slot Nigel, lend the build team a digital camera to record the assembly I’m sure they will oblige.
That’s what I got done with my domi naked, I have loads of pictures throughout the build.:)

I think the official line is that anyone asking for that stunningly finished carbon fibre weave to be covered in paint is politely told that “Sir is clearly in the wrong showroom”... whence they are led out of the back door... and shot.

Actually, I don’t know, it never occurred to me to ask...

Thought when you said you were going you'd like them, got to see these bikes in the flesh. You right about Garner i spent time talking to him on Sunday his enthusiasm is infectious i first meet him about 2005? at a race meeting at Donington when he was trying to get backing to start Norton.I have been around Norton since the 70s racing and must admit the first time i meet him i thought her we go again another dreamer great to see how wrong i was wish in and Norton every success an i also got the impression he has the customers in mind.

But I hope in a very courteous, and gentlemanly like manner.
After all, you must have standards, even today.

Hello FE , Will you be keeping the 961 ? And if so have you given some thought to making it more comfortable long distance machine ?

Yes I am Tony and yes, it’s current having Sport bars fitted instead of the clip ons. I’ve no other ‘comfort’ mods planned at present cos, frankly, compared to the clip ons, the Sport bars make it feel like a Dyna Glide....

I was at the Nec wednesday also.... and i also ordered a superlight..(gonna be as common as muck.... lol) Be aware that although the bike is advertised at £19,950..the one they had on show was approaching £30,000 !... The titanium full exhaust system shown on the bike is £2500 and its a billet swing arm on the show bike - costing £6000- (and Norton are very reluctant to fit one) the standard bike will have a cast swing arm... plus most of the shiny polishing is extra...footrests+ kit, centre part of frame,etc... The Norton guys weren't for mentioning all this until i asked em ! Unfortunately for me, i'm gonna have to sell my beloved cafe racer/SF.... ( i dwelled on it for 4 hours at the show before finally committing)... so anyone interested in a mint bike with all the goodies, and only 1869 miles, look out for a forthcoming ad.

Well obviously you’re a man of taste sir!

I did not clarify things as well as you did, but I knew about the pipe and guessed about the swinging arm cos it’s one of the differences between the RR and SS on the 1200s.

Whether or not I even think about the titanium exhaust depends on whether or not it’s compatible with the ‘proper’ race can.

To be perfectly honest, I’ll be quite happy with less polishing. I’d prefer a machined finish anyway.

What spec are you going for?

Are you gonna ride it on the track?

When do you expect it?

Hi Eddie.... you can get the 'end can' only....i think it was £895 if i remember right... I've gone for the full system...i was disappointed when i found out the billet swing arm was not part of the standard package...but was told the cast one ''could'' be polished up at further expense ...i'm thinking about it... but might go for a painted satin black colour... i like the shiny footrest/brackets though :)... The bike will be used purely on the road... should be a great country lane scratcher ! They told me july delivery but i'll take that with a pinch of salt... i ordered my cafe racer at the nec show dec 2009 , promised delivery the following may......and finally got it sept 2012 !! But we'll not bring up sour memories of what Norton were like then,eh?...... As said above , i'm reluctantly having to sell my 961....very sad cos i love the bike...just posted it for sale now...:(:(:(....

Yes, it’s the end can I’ve gone for, I was told it fits onto the stock downpipes but not sure if it fits the Titanium system or not. If it does, I might be tempted, we’ll have to wait n see.

My 961 is very much in the satin black theme and I do like it. But with the 650, I really like the idea of having little or no ‘added colouring’ just exposed carbon weave and machined alloy.

Roll on next summer eh?!

not sure if it was the full titanium system fitted on the show bike or just the end can on the standard headers... but surely the titanium pipe will fit on the titanium headers..that's the idea of a ''full'' system... as said i ordered the full system, but do you know if we get the full standard system as well ? ...i would hope so for 'MOT' purposes.

Al, indeed the Titanium end pipe, with open mega, will fit on the Titanium headers, and as you say, that’s the advertised ‘full system’.

It’s a tad ironic however, but that’s not suitable for most tracks in the U.K. hence they also sell a ‘proper’ race can which is limited to 105db. I’ll be using mine on the road and track, so I need the 105db race can.

But Rob didn’t know if it fitted the Titanium front pipes or not.

IF the race can is interchangeable with the full Titanium system, then I might go for it. If not, then I’ll stick with the race can / stock header set up.

According to Rob, the race can comes with a dB killer too. Usually, these are good enough for MOTs.

No, I didn’t ask if it’ll come with the stock pipes as well, I should have! I would assume it does, that’s what Norton have always done thus far.

Nice video BTW !

Ahh...i didn't know about the 105db race can... i just presumed there was the titanium system and a standard 'quiet' system...

Al, you’ve either got very tolerant neighbours, or you’re an anti social b*stard with them there open megas...

Either way, good on yer !!

I’ve done quite a bit of weight saving work on my ‘74 Cdo. It’s very noticeable just wheeling it in and out of the shed!

It weighs 386lbs according to my bathroom scales. At least 40 lbs lighter than stock.

With 64rwhp, it is actually quicker than my 961.

So... the SL weighs 348lbs according to Norton...

That’s a nearly 40lbs lighter than my Cdo... BUT with 105bhp.

Note, with the titanium exhaust system it’s 334lbs and 111bhp.

I reckon it’s gonna be a fun bike...!

Is it cast or built up tubing ( welded)?
I don't think I would want to ride around on a cast Al. ( or cast anything ) swing arm.
Second question- how does one machine a swing arm from billet?
Unless the swing arm members are hollowed out somehow they will be left as solid pieces, which would result in a very heavy swing arm, size for weight.

Glen
