ZFD, do you have headpipes for these that fit properly?
Not yet- part##s 06-0620 & 06-0621. Actually a project I discussed with our buyer earlier today. In my own interest- I have a right hand one on my '68 Fastback that, though original, doesn't quite fit and rubs on the r.h. frametube. When we have finished the "S"-type pipes- which was a rather too longwinded project, but we seem to be getting there now- we want to do the early Fastbacks next. Fortunately we have originals to use as templates on the '69 Fastback (the "Tony Denniss" bike).

The silencers we have- part# NM 23767 & NM 23768, as well as the silencer mounting brackets, part##s 06-0563 (flat), 06-0564 (shaped) . Have not put them up on our exhaust service information yet, I notice.

As for the narrow front mudguards, our sales since we had them indicate there is little useable material left out there!

Silver / Orange Seat . Early Badge identification helps to date them . TAKE CARE of the badges . Id soak them in Amourall . Maybe . Can Crack Easy .

The silver frame Commando was a pre-production bike, the frame sprayed with silver aerosols from the local "Halfords" car accessory outlet. Production Commandos had black frames. The orange seat bikes- there were at least two, one low handlebars, one high handlebars- were exhibition bikes. I have yet to see an orange seat production machine.
My friend Stefan Knittel- motorcycle historian, Norton nut and journalist- has made it one of his life's ambitions to clear the "silver bike/orange seat" mystery up and is currently sorting through all the press pictures and journalist's archives pictures from that time- he has access to an archive second to none- and is on the phone practically daily with his latest findings!

' Caveman ' Doulton , in N.Z. , a teacher from Rangi two toes ( Rangitoto ) Colledge had one , New . cant fix the year but likely 68 / 69 .
Talk off the neigbourhood . James Bond. Aston Martin . ' oh , I say , how dashing etc , amougst the non motorcycle hateing housewives .

I may have been at intermediate school by then . 1970 / 71 . Dunno . The ' new ' teacher from the South Island had turned up.

Theres pictures of a Orange Seat resto or two , on here ( Commando Forum ).

What I recall was seeing it as he ducked into the post office at Browns Bay within a fortnite of ' the roumours ' . or a week , even .
AND he said Hello . :o :)
Initially it was immaculate . spiffing Even. Being Brand New . . Would hear it climb out of the Valley , from the paternal boat yard .
Disapointed a few times going along the way and it not showing . ANYWAY a few years later , I can recall studying it there ( P.O. )
as it sat and looking at the ingrained dirt inplaces on the ORANGE seat .
Had a chat , as to its reliability . near faultless - self maintained and capeabilities .

" Will cruise at 90 , but prefer to keep it down around 70 , and its safer . "

Was the Overall silver paintwork one. Later he got a car ( Humber 80 ) as they had two kids .
It languished under his house for a few years then as they wouldnt fit on . A few years after that , when I was at colledge , I talked to him about it. He said he had sold it .He said it really needed an overhaul . Rings , Valve Grind . but was still running well , but had only been ridden occassionally ,in the middle two yrs , then hadnt run for two ( about 6 + total ownership )
Had only stopped to admire the view ( reset the points :P ) once unpremeditatedly , once or twice ' otherwise ' .
43.000 on it in thet wo yrs , then about 6 / 700 the next two .

A student of his was in raptures he'd manadged to trade a H1 Kwackersiki in on a Commando , later . A Combat , Black
slight nick in the tank , needed transfers & had slight scrape marks .And never thrashed . But only 15.000 miles ,
from the shop that became Mike Vincent Suzuki .
A honda shop then . I think . that'd be about 74 .
A two year old Commando , never thrashed , for a caned 500 Kwaker .  :D
A keen types dream come true . Advised on serviceing by the Fastback protagonist .

Such was Life .In ' The Bays ' .

update: got her running! new fluids, new ignition switch, new battery, and she fired up! used a fuel bladder as i still have to line the tank. It's obvious the carbs need to be gone through (i'm thinking clogged pilot jets) as she didnt want to stay running. I understand now the talk about kicking it through compression and then letting her have it. On my honda 750 you don't have to think about that so i was curious how that was going to work. That seems to be a key step to getting it to start. Next step...line the tank, figure out whey the front wheel makes a crunching sound when rolling, rebuild the carbs then go for a ride!

God Progress .

Hyrumph. . . Check the auto advance is actuateing freely - not sticking. Not a lot of RADIAL slack , either .

One of these Joe Hunt pre unit Magnetos would be the bees knees , if youre throwing loot around .

CARBS , strip & clean . Only Con'Cs Id waste money on are Magnesium bodied ones . :P Nearenough will do .In fact thats how theyre made.

A good pair of matched R & L Monoblocks would be another story . If in mint condition ( unscoured ) , they have promise . More exact carburation .
otherwise theres several alternative carbs . . .

Steady as she goes . Bit of redex down the bores for ring treatments not a bad idea, or in fuel.Or STP or something.Maybe.
