New Exhaust System Tips?

I am getting close to finishing the 1972 Commando that has now been a project off & on for 20 years. One of the last items on the work list will be to install the new exhaust system purchased something like 15 years ago. Are there any things I can do in advance to preserve the finish from discoloration or corrosion? I'm thinking wax will just burn right off and may not be helpful. Is there anything better?

Bluing come from a lean or an advanced timing condition. Just make sure these two things are not happening at start up. If you have an old beat up set, put them on for your tune up sessions.

This is what I have been doing thanks to seeing a Triumph shop that had an old exhaust system that they used to get freshly overhauled bikes adjusted. My old system is on now and the finish looks stable, not getting blue or looking bad in any way after a bit over 700 miles. Nothing further, no coatings or anything that might help?

New Exhaust System Tips?

I think anything (coating, treatments) added would just cause extra heat retention. A cheap quality pipe will also blue if close to unfavorable parameters. If you have good quality pipes, i am sure you will be ok.

Also, I thing putting anything on the pipes will dull them over time.

Hudson 29 as suggested use an older set to get the motor running just right with light brown to greyish sparkplug colour ,identical on both. During this time period your new pipes will have dried the high heat manifold paint you coated the insides with. Mufflers too. Pour or spray it in , roll about and dump out the excess. A little paint thinner on a rag to clean up dripmarks. Clean the outside metiulously of fingerprints etc. before startup. Retighten the nuts with special tool after a good ride. Resist the urge to tinker with carb(s) again. Peter.

Don't worry Paul, every inch of your bike is polished, painted, powdercoated or plated & the two hours of hand rubbing & cleaning your going to need to do after every trip around the corner or weekly ride to Scotties will keep youp pipes looking fine fine fine.

Well, maybe I had better hold off on this switch until after the carb situation is settled. Right now I'm thinking of going back to the Amals or perhaps the dual carb setup from JS Motorsport. The bike starts easily and runs sweetly but the single Mikuni seems to run out of steam as the revs rise. I'm certainly no racer, but I do like to have the power on tap if needed or wanted.

blue and gold head pipes are manly

I already have a couple of motorbikes that have blued the chrome on the pipes. One, the SR500, has just about burned it completely off. That stock carb was set lean for emmisions and pipe ran hot. The new 36mm Mikuni runs a lot cooler and with more power as well. It might keep the finish on the pipe now. I'm hoping to keep the Norton looking tidy . . .
