Picked up a steel fuel tank today, peering into it...well it's rusty.
The old story stood a few years in a damp shed with the filler missing.
Anyway i stopped at another stall before home to look at some forks, the old guy was interested in the tank and suggested Electrolytic cleaning.
Googled it back home...it sounds to good to be true, Water, washing soda ,battery and a lump of steel...bingo ..spotless tank! All rust converted into metal,,check it out.

Dave, The Electroylic Derusting process ; One spoon of soda per gallon of water. fill the tank ,drop in a iron bar [witout touching the metal] connect a pos lead to the bar,Neg to the tank from the battery switch on and wait while the rust turns back into metal! The old guy had done his tank..he said it looked new after.
I allways used small screws ,nails etc and shook the tank to death!

Yes, I can't wait to see how it works for you.

I tried this method last year on a Honda CB750F tank that was moderately rusted. I used the same solution with a battery charger and inserted a coat hanger, that I had bent into an accordian shape, into the tank. I did this for 48 hrs. and changed the solution and cleaned the crud off of the wire several times.....It does work!
