Need to get a handle on it

Mechanically I'm 98% there, the last challenge is getting the clutch to operate. I have a '75 Mk III where I have removed the factory fitted clutch perch (the whole switch assembly for that matter) and 'am now seeking a free fitted Thomaselli or Magura type perch and lever assembly that will accomodate the barrel end of the Norton clutch cable (06-6476) and have a similar range of adjustment so that I do not have to hack the cable.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I can say the Magura I purchased had to be worked on a bit where the cable end goes, Not a big deal but it didn't fit out of the box. I had to drill the hole through the other end so it would fit. I thought it would fit the same cable. Buyer beware I guess, Chuck.

Years ago I had a Magura for a while and I recall having to drill the section that holds the ferule a little bigger.

I have used both the Magura Power Lever (from Dennis Kirk) and a Japanese (Suzuki?) that I picked up from FleaBay. Both needed modification. The handle of the Magure needed enlarging for the barrel of the stock Norton cable and the threaded adjuster needed slight relieving so the cable would slip in freely. I briefly thought about replacing the barrel on the cable with one that would fit the handle, but decided it was better to be able to use a stock cable than have to make one up each time.

If there is a clutch perch and handle that will fit and use the Norton cable without modification, I haven't found it yet.

Yep, get out the drill and rat-tail file.

Been there too many times to count.

Last year, between races at Road America, for one... (thanx, Bruce @ Michigan Eng.)

Thanks for the wisdom, not what I wanted to hear, but jibs with all my efforts to locate a proper perch.

RonL: Great advice! I got a Magura mechanical perch from CNW, it came with a cable end (barrell) that is much smaller than the Norton equivalent...The idea of needing a clutch cable (maybe in the middle of no where), getting one and then realizing that the battle hasn't yet begun, ug! I tried to solder the smaller barrell onto the Norton cable, but my soldering skills suck and the cable promptly pulled through on the first try. Making the perch fit the cable makes tons of sense!

My plan is to drill out the Magura to fit the STANDARD Norton clutch cable, polish the internal bore and leave it at that.....until CNW delivers the hydraulic clutch actuation pieces...

Thanks all!

That' the best soloution and it has been done many times before. I have a Triumph front brake on my Chang and if I broke the hand made cable I'd have to adapt another clutch cable. it's a lot easier to use off the shelf spares.

I bought a cable from venhil in Surry, Uk which came with a smaller barrell than the original, much to my anoyance!
They provided a little clip on adaptor to bring the barrel to the correct size. This has actually so far worked very well!
They also sell 'featherlight' PTFE lined cable shrouds which are really good cables for smooth operation. I ren em on two AMC box setups and the cable transformed the clutch operation on my Triton.
I wonder if you can get one of these adaptors?

I have a Magura lever and Venhill cable on my 850. I dealt with the barrel sizing issue by replacing the barrel with the smaller one that came with the Magura kit. I used a friend's solder pot (well, actually he did it while I watched :) ) It hasn't pulled off yet!

I have to say that drilling out the lever sounds like a much better solution. I'll be doing that when it's time to replace the cable. Hopefully that won't be when I'm out on the road somewhere.
