Hi, mates Im having horrible clutch dragging issue not an understatement im not dicking around anymore gonna put new plates in what do you recommend? brand, dealers etc took i out today horrible ive had nothing put bad luck with this transmission almost bout ready to throw in the towel here.. Any advice would be appreciated :x

What kind of plates do you have? I assume we are talking about the friction plates and not the steel ones?

If the steel plates are badly warped or have "lumpy" places in them you probably should think of replacing them. I cleaned my steel plates, used a felt tip marker and made a bunch of "X"s on the surface and then rubbed them on a piece of fine sandpaper on a true (flat) surface. I was a little surpised by how much of the surface was not in contact.

As for the friction plates, if they are fiber, then I would recommed getting some 3-M High Strength Brake Cleaner at the auto parts. It works great for getting the baked in crap off. I have no idea what it does to health or environment but it works great on clutch plates. Then buy one of Dynodave's clutch seals and install it!

some things to look at #1 worn center hub #2 gear oil contamination # 3 warped plates #4 primary chain to tight. all the above WILL cause your trouble with drag. #1 give your plates a GOOD cleaning #2 make sure ALL the plates are FLAT#3 a clutch push rod seal #4 make sure the primary chain is NOT to tight #5 make sure the center hub splines are smooth. if it is the bronze plates they are bad to wear the center hub.

tigman, I don't know what country you live in from your avatar but to answer your question, it sounds like it may be time to purchase a complete set of new steel and friction plates.

Here in the USA it costs under $100 from both Old Britts and Colorado Norton Works for a set of 750 or 850 plates.

The problem, as others have stated, is that over time the steel plates can get warped from heat and also can build up a lot of glaze and the friction plates can simply wear down over time, hence might as well just order all new plates.

glaze on plates DON"T cause drag and it is not often you will see the friction plates worn in thickness and this also will NOT cause drag!!! steels should measure approx. .080 bronze type frictions approx .125 and 750 fiber .145. why just throw parts at it without a proper diagnoses. If you don't understand how it works than you cant fix it.

By drag I assume you mean that when you pull in the clutch to try to get it into first gear it's not easy?

How about your clutch center? Is it notched?

My steels have been warped since birth. There are places where the friction plates NEVER touched the steel.

Need clutch plates???

the bronze plates are all but indestructible but they are hard on the center hub and VERY heavy. the barnett's will wear the spline's off of them so are easier on the hub and are a lot lighter. I prefer the surflex but they are pricy, harder to find the solid fiber ones and takes more work to fit in a 5 plate clutch.

to broaden the discussion slightly, has anyone tried narrow steel plates?

I'm thinking of going with these for the current project:

Had your dragging issue too. Switched plates 2X, once to stock, next to Barnett. Added new Venhill cable, addressed routing issues, stack height. No joy as Hobot would say. Never checked the clutch center carefully - was notched. Replaced it, problem completely cured. (I added a clutch rod seal as well just to be safe in the future and switched to ATF to more easily see any contamination, but the notching was the culprit.) Moral is, don't automatically assume it's plates.
