MY MK3 LAYSHAFT BEARING REMOVED

Hi all,,

Finally today with the help of a heat gun and a kind forum members advise I have my MK 3 lay-shaft complete with bearing on the work bench, not bad considering this is the 1st time I have ever ventured inside a Norton gearbox, or any gearbox for that matter.. Can fellow members please look over my images and comment on the bearing itself as it does not look like the dangerous Fag bearing I had expected to find ... Thanks ..

A long time since I changed mine but that does look like the offender. I have used the roller replacement but now have a tufnol caged ball in place (Mick Hemmings recommend). It locates the layshaft as original. I'd certainly replace it now it's all apart. It's a bit fiddly getting it back together and worth being careful with the gearchange pawl spring and how it sits when the outer cover goes back. There's always the Old Britts gearbox guide, really useful for the first time or even second!

Looks like you have already had a replacement fitted but of the same type that fails eg normal ball bearing with a steel cage. It looks like the cage is already showing signs of failure as it looks to be discoloured, so it needs replacing again with either the roller and shimming or the ball with tufnol cage and no shiming.

Thanks to dougmatson for the scary image of the original dangerous fag bearing, Keith and kommando for the advise on my present SNR bearing, from what you all say I had better replace this one with at least a roller with a Tufnol cage ...

While we are on the subject of MK3 gearbox's before I stripped down this gearbox I was finding it quite hard to get into 1st gear without some pretty hard prodding, I thought once I opened the box it would be obvious but for the life of me I can not see anything that would have caused this, all gears look just as good as the ones in my images, the bike does have 26,000 miles up but the whole inside of this box looks to be in amazing condition... Your thoughts please ?

Can anyone give me a part number for this Tufnol Caged Bearing .. Thanks ...

Box looks good. It's the clutch.Pull apart clutch ,notching center and gearbox oiled up plates ,take photos for us. :|

Apart from " I was finding it quite hard to get into 1st gear without some pretty hard prodding". Where there any other reasons why you are replacing g/box bearings at 27Kish miles..???? :? :?
