OK, am slowly getting engine back together. Being a dumb-ass, my part storage system has been somewhat questionable. Found this in my timing side parts pile.

What is this?

Oh Bugger !

That's the camshaft thrust washer. If you haven't used a spare one then you're going to have to split the cases to put it back. Sorry to bring the bad news. :cry:

It sits between the tacho gear on the cam and the timing side bush.
 
OK being a semi-intelligent monkey, I actually had the local pro-shop re-assemble the bottom end after I had to replace my cracked con rods. I took it apart with the intent of re-assembling it myself but, recognizing my limits, I changed my mind. Didn't want to screw it up!

No but I will ask the guy. He is an excellent mechanic and always lets me in the back to ask a bizzillion questions. re the parts list, I doubt it. I will check my receipt though.

I'm praying for you brother that a spare was installed.
That's not even funny if you got to split the cases again over a washer

You can tell if the cam thrust washer is there or not by endplay in the cam. Slacken up on the cam chain and check it before you split the case. I don't have the usual endplay off the top of my head, but without the thrustwasher it going to be absurdly large. What year engine is it? Got a timed breather?

P.S You can see the thrust washer if you take the tachdrive out.
 
You can see the thrust washer if you take off the tach drive, don't ask how I know about this. I just put it on as an edit to my last post but I thought you may not see it if you already read it.

removal of tach drive is a clutch save BPatton.
I will definitely file that bit of valuable advise away in the old brain housing group.
As a man who usually does things twice and both times the hard way its good to know spliting the case is a last resort only if the washer was forgotten :shock:
