Modified front drum

I know the rivet counters and the purists will have a fit, but I think this modified hub will look cool on a modified bike.

I like it, Jean, I am making a front brake with a Norton hub and a Triumph TLS backing pate, my hub has large circular vent holes which I will fill with mesh.

I think it looks cool Jean I don't think were going to run out of the hubs for a little while yet. I have a John Tickle front brake that I might lighten up the hub some.

Here is a back hub I modified. My friend turned all the fins off and trued the inside surfaces, I did the slots to match a front hub (pictures to come later) I think it weighs about 2 pounds less than it did before swiss cheezing it, and that is unsprung weight.

Are they anodized, Jean, and if so did you have to remove the cast iron lining from the front drum for this process?

No just bead blasted, nothing was removed except the bearings. The front hub has some corrosion pitting the surface. My friend says he will have it powder coated, it seems they have some sort of filler they put on before they powder coat parts and it smooths out all the imperfections. The drum braking surface is also pitted but it should be OK after turning the drum.

It looks very pretty but is now about half as strong & rigid as it once was. If I were you I would keep my eyes open for cracks. A drum like this would be better suited to a lightweight bike.

A brake modified like this doesn't really get used in anger. Its more for looks.

If you are reducing unsprung weight for racing then a better way is to reduce the thickness between the webs from the inside and limit yourself to medium size circular holes which don't focus stress and possible cracking into the corners.
