" so we cant put an earlier timing cover onto MK3 cases"
probably. I'm fitting a very early Dommie cover to pre MK3 cases

1. Not really correctly, they don't have the "Feed Bush, Oil Pump, MK3 & Eariler Upgrade 06-6191.

2. This bush is larger than the early one. The pump should be dismantled to enable a special tool to push out the old smaller bush. Then the early pump body must be machined to accept the new bush and let it seat properly.

This is probably why my oil seal fell off so easily (and destroyed the engine), I didn't have the proper bigger bush.

It does have the larger diameter bush.

As it's plain to see in the video (and 'somebody' pointed out in the comments section) there was a loose fitting washer hanging on the spigot! The seal therefore would not have been fully seated so hardly any wonder it fell off!

I only know of very few instances where the 6161 would work on other than MKIII, and that is where a very few pre MKIII engines were NOT fully drilled for normal commando OPV return to the oil pump inlet...since the MKIII covers dump inside the timing chest (like all pre commando) ...but you all knew that right!!!
I would not normally have any interest in trying to make mismatching parts work despite AN/norton having made this mistake of a kit. Might even need a MKIII oil pump to make the anti wet sump valve work??? The MKIII disc won't go on an early oil pump without machining.
There are lots of correct parts available on ebay. Creating crazy combinations is possible but WHY?

FWIW the regular commando gears is .980" and the MKIII is .917".
A lot more than .0065"
Have not yet finished this timing cover page ...

I have a MKIII timing cover on my 1974 850. It works fine. It wasn't this kit, it was individually purchased parts. I had no problem with the gear either.

I also have the MkIII cover fitted onto a 72, i did blank off the oil return hole & didn't need to shim out the oil pump seal

Well now you have me worried I can't remember blanking off anything when I fitted a MK3 timing cover to my 750
I did change to the flat type seal but that's all I remember
Mind you that was thousands of miles ago
I have a pender oil pressure light fitted ,this goes out as soon as you start the engine
And stays off a second or two when you shut the engine down
So oil pressure should be ok
Could someone post a photo of what needs blocking off please
Cheers

There's no actual need to blank off the return drilling (as it's also there in the Mk3 case) so nothing to be concerned about.

I put a Mk3 timing cover on my '74 Mk2 engine. I bought it as an upgrade kit, and the Mk3 type oil pump outlet and conical seal were part of the kit. No trouble fitting the parts, and was very careful about priming the oil pump lines when re-assembling it.

Hasnt stopped the thing wet sumping though...

I've installed the AN kit a couple of times. Followed the oil pump instructions. Checked that the ball moved smoothly - it did. Was careful installing to be sure ball stayed where is belonged. Blocked off nothing, drilled no holes. Works fine. At least slows wet sumping - in my tests stopped it but I can't say will forever.
