Hello all, am I missing something? My 77 Mk3 has a trip meter on the speedo but doesn't have any way to reset it to 0.
Was this a factory joke same as some of the other bits I found during the rebuild?
Or is there a secret pass word or something?
Regards Graeme.

You sure? Mine (Veglia) has a reset knob on the underside.

Mk3 Speedo Trip Meter

Mine are the blue arrow type, and there is no hole in the bottom or side for any shaft or knob to go.
Only the speedo cable fitting and the light bulb hole.
Maybe they ran out of holes?

Will a MKIII speedo work on earlier bikes? I'm to damned old to remember my mileage (fuel range) without a trip meter..

yes the MKIII had a small knob on a fairly thin shaft. Turn it one way it would reset the trip ODO, and IIRC.... turn the other way and it unscrewed and fall out .
Should work on an early bike.

Smiths, or Veglia? As the knob isn't there I'm guessing its Smiths because as dynodave said, the Smiths reset knobs often fall out-but the magnetic instrument trip knobs clip into the speedo and they often become loose after being removed and refitted a few times-so end up dropping out, but they do not unscrew as he said.

Yes. But Veglias need to be installed in the long black pods. All Norton Veglia speedos (used 73-on) had trip meters.

I am trying to find a trip meter reset knob. Like the previous poster, I have the shallower smiths speedo, with the blue arrow on the face. The knob should fit through a rubber grommet in the base of the Speedo. I looked at the link LAB posted, and wondered if that is the right type for me?

It may not work anyway
My blue arrow has the shaft but I can't turn it if I tried real hard It may snap off (could be what happened to yours) of may stuff the speedo so I'll worry about it when I have a bit of doe I can't find another use for and send it to the shop for redoing

It does work. In the Speedo, you can see a square hole where presumably the "shaft thing" locates. You can operate it by sticking a small flat blade screwdriver into the square bit, and turning it which rotates the odo around to 0. As you say though it does feel a bit notchy. I'd like to order the right shaft for the job. My garage is littered with small bits I've ordered(wrongly) and not worth sending back!

Maybe I should twist mine a bit harder but I will be pissed if something breaks. I've tried lube spray but no joy
Perhaps the PO tried it contrary to the sticker on the speedo and that's why its stuck now
Otherwise it works fine

Unlikely I think. If the knob is pulled hard enough then it will simply unclip from the speedo unit, that's why the sticker warns "IMPORTANT DO NOT PULL TRIP SHAFT DOWN ROTATE ONLY TO RE-SET--SNAP FIT"

OK thanks LAB so if I try to force it do you have any idea what the worst that could happen may be?

I'm not sure if it would damage the trip part of the unit (if it isn't damaged already?) but the most likely result would be the tip of the trip knob shaft would snap off, or the small spring clip that retains it may bend so the shaft would fall out.
The little retaining clip is not very robust anyway-which is why the trip knobs often go missing!

Thanks for that. I've given it a good go even with pliers but the trip meter bounces a bit but won't change numbers
Sprayed lube inside so I'll see if it loosens it up over night and keep fiddling.
Shame the clocks can't be opened up by the average tinkerer
Anyway thanks again

I believe you can buy replacement bezels, which would allow you to get inside the instrument, do your work, and have a nice new bezel on completion. :)

any of our gauge repair people will sell you a shaft for your trip meter,,,,they will know exactly what you need when you tell them the gauge you have...... scott@flatlandcycles.com comes to mind.
