I have just installed new bearings in my rear wheel, but the lockring does not screw down flat like I think it should. I thought sure I had the bearing down to it's seat, but maybe it is too shallow. The bearing is recessed down 5mm and the screw measures 8mm. I have about 1.5 mm clearance from the lockring flange down to the surface.
I don't remember how this was before I disassembled, but it doesn't seem right. The internal spacer is touching the back of the bearing like it should.
Do I need to get this gap down? Will tightening the lockring more force it down? Did I leave out a part?
Thanks,

Have you driven the disc-side bearing in too far (to a depth of more than 5/16" below the disc spigot)?

Are you sure the bearings are the correct widths (the double-row sprocket bearing is the widest of the three)?

Edit:
6203 17x40x12mm
6204 20x47x14mm

Sprocket bearing: 4203 17x40x16mm

Thanks, LAB. Yes I've got the correct bearings in, but what's this about 5/16???? I just drove it down to the seat. I've never heard of stopping it short.
So, the disk side is down almost 7/16, I guess that is the problem.
Any good ideas how I can raise it out to 5/16?
Man, this is a bummer.

You couldn't have read the manual (Section H5) then?.

The bearing information I quoted above came from the AN website-but I think they may have the wheel bearing sizes reversed?

Warm the hub and try tightening* the lockring, hopefully that will move the bearing assembly over without damaging the bearings?

*(Some copies of the MkIII factory manual state that the lockring is: "Left hand thread"-but it isn't.)

Success! I warmed everything up, made a tool for the lockring, greased it up, and screwed it down. It pushed both bearings into place. The disc side wound up at 5/16 down. Thank the Lord.
I'll never understand why Norton would make a bearing recess deep and then ask that the bearing not be driven down to the seat. At least supply a spacer.
Well, its just one more of the British idiosyncrasies, I guess. That's what makes Norton special.
