What's the secret to getting the gearshift crosshaft sleeve into the rubber sleeve with out destroying the rubber?

06-5753 sleeve, protector?
Or 06-5183 seal, cross shaft that goes in the primary?
Get a new one that is not hard as a rock or shrunk from oil or gasoline dripping.
Silicone grease helps too!
