Hi there…

Does anybody know if all the 850 crankshafs are rhe same?
Can i use an mk2a crankshaft in the mk3 engine?
Thanks in advance….

The Mk3 crankshaft is wider between the cases and the drive-side shaft is longer due to the electric start sprag assembly so maybe not impossible to fit a Mk2A (or any other pre-Mk3) crank into Mk3 850 cases but it wouldn't be a straight swap and the Mk3 electric starter obviously couldn't be used.
Maybe a difference in timing-side shafts as well (because the Mk3 crank and intermediate gears are thinner) but I'm not sure about that.

I assume the extra thickness is in the cheeks?

Is it in both, or just one?

How much wider is it?

Why was this done, did it address a known failure mode?

I’m just curious here …

Both apparently.

both ES crank cheeks are WIDER than any earlier commando crank cheeks so they will NOT fit in NON ES cases.

I don't recall any actual crank dimensions having been quoted for either, only the crank and intermediate gear widths (I'm searching for the Mk3 intermediate gear width but probably thinner by a similar amount).

I don't know.
