Mk111 clutch tool

I need to pull the clutch off in order to replace the main seal on my MK111.
The shop manual states that a special tool is required for this in order to prevent injury from the compressed diaphram.
Is there a safe way to remove the clutch without this special tool?

I only have pre MkIII experience but i'm sure you need the compressor - for safety not convenience.
Mine is home made, a short section of 4" steel pipe, a hefty piece of flat bar drilled for a threaded rod/nut. Its been going strong for 25 years.

You need to buy or as has been suggested make a tool, but don't try to do it without one, if the spring cannot be compressed to the point where it will rotate freely before the circlip is removed then damage or injury will be the likely result, and you won't be able to re-assemble the clutch anyway. The same type of tool is needed for all standard Commando clutches.

You're quite right, Iain and the Mk111 is identical. It's probably possible without a compressor but has anyone lived to tell the tale ? :shock:

I rather imagine that the spring would fly around the workshop like a ball race spun up on an air line, but of course I've never tried that :wink:
