Mk 3 or Pre Mk 3?

I'm always half or more confused by the MK designations, saved list to review and correct.

Matt if you are not pulling our legs on age and interest, watch out, watch Burt Monroe Worlds Fastest Indian and see if that appealing to you. The 750's were the hot rods especially the Combat Bombs cream of the whole Brit Iron crop.
This forum is such a random bantering its hard to grasp the whole Commando picture. Much as list is helpful there's decades of mostly organized text of best of Nortoneering in Captain Norton's Notes.

Mk 3 or Pre Mk 3?

It took me almost a year nightly reading to go through it all and has guided me in creating a wonderful Combat that tempts me to drop out and just be a straving racer. Also open the Technical notes at begining of forum posts and go top to bottom taking in all ya can.

If it was me just a couple years from lic age, I'd sweet talk dad in letting you take it all apart, collecting tools as needs no time pressure, fondle and polish each item to its threads or put on list to replace. Factory warts can be dealt with in lesure or made to work as intended. BEWARE! You will be a super star attention target anywhere and everywhere you appear with a Norton Commando. Only expcr[tion is Brit Rallies where you find your real pecking order in cycle manhood : )
Go to a rally soon as possible. Bet its easy to tempt dad into that first step back into life/death motorcycle hobby.

Sorry for resurrecting the thread but I only came across the posts on the second page today for some reason, all the info is great, and I found my answer. And like Hobot said, hopefully I can make my way out to a rally, come spring time of course, it's too cold here in Canada right now!

I go along with 79x100 but LAB is right too. I lived it Dottie and never heard of Mark numbers until the 850s came out. We went by model years but there were mid year changes. For example later combats in 1972 were a little different -- more 850-ish. The sidestand with a tail, and seamed mufflers and superblend main bearings already installed come to mind.

Hey Matt, greetings from Canada, my avatar says where, 72 combat (Crazy), you have a pre- Mk 111 model, the best one for performance ,yet you must ask your dad about main bearing fix and layshaft bearing fix in gearbox. First commando at 16 years young so know the feeling so much later !

Torontonian, I don't think he has changed anything about the bike except he added a Boyer way back, so I do plan on replacing pretty much all the bearings, I've heard about the poor main and layshaft bearing so they will be replaced for sure, any recommendations? And here are some pictures of the bike.

I have a '72 Combat 750 Interstate. However I have came across many sites that talk about Mk3 or earlier Nortons. How do i determine if mine is a Mk3 or a pre Mk3 bike?

Actually all Combats were MkIV! As LAB's chart shows all the '72 model year 750's were designated as MkIV. Which preceded MkI, MkII, and MkIII 850's
Confused yet?

Yes Matt, your father did not replace the driveside layshaft bearing in the gearbox so a total teardown is required to fit the roller one. Use heat and freezing the new bearing ,kinda fun. Superblend main bearings needed too ,heated cases and freezing bearings, total teardown of motor but educational experience. Need to know mileage for other wear bit thingys. Enjoy , peter
