hi everyone.
i have just stripped down the engine and discovered an outrageous amount of wear on the right hand inner lobe. i mean something like 3 mm worn away.
so i need a new camshaft. can you tell me whats best and ideally from where. theres nothing on ebay or the likes
cheers mark

Chilled iron cams are what should be fitted beware of nitrided steel cams. Depending where you are in the world would effect your nearest supplier and what type of cam you want a standard or one of many performance options.
For standard i would get a Andover Norton cam myself also if your cam has worn then check the followers very carefully as any ware or damage to those will damage the new cam and shorten its life.

I don't know where your located but I will be glad to supply a Web-Cam. Jim

Also Andover Norton and Megacycle Cams supply good quality standard profile Commando cams.

thanks guys. i am in australia. i wasnt sure if the mk3 cam was different from the other 850 engines so i should have also asked that question. i will replace the worn cam follower as that is marked as well. Thanks again for feedback. interested in costings etc. cheers mark

Any Commando with the points in the timing cover uses that cam. Jim

If the follower is not trashed it can be resurfaced. General good practice and recommended by some cam suppliers. MegaCycle offers the service.

From MegaCycle's online catalog:
"It is necessary to use new or reconditioned cam followers or rocker arms with each new or reconditioned
cam shaft. Using worn rocker arms or followers will cause damage to the cam. We offer regrinding of
certain tappets and reconditioning of rocker arms for many models."
You could also approach a machinist local to you that knows a thing or two and have them resurface the hardface on the Norton cam followers.

1/2 inch lift and 720 deg. duration .

BEST for WHAT ? what / where / how do you ride it . any other mods ?
theres one or two posts on CAMSHAFTS here , try SEARCH - a months study should narrow it down a bit .

yep, i guess it can be complicated. thanks for the responses. i might shop a combat cam , sounds impressive at the least. ill start with andover norton. cheers mark

Remember that if you fit a Combat cam, you also have to raise the CR to make it work correctly, the Combat had 10:1 CR.

If you fit a Combat cam into a low CR 850 it will almost certainly be slower than it would with a stock cam (consensus seems to be that most left the factory at, or below, 8:1 despite the claim they were 8.5:1).

Unless you are planning other work, like raising the CR, changing silencers, playing with air boxes, head porting, carbs, etc. you may well be best sticking with a good quality stock profile cam.

good advise on the combat cam. i will just get a standard one and keep it simple. thanks mate.
