Need carb help. 71 commando. mikuni carb. Runs and idles ok when i start. i run it with the choke for a few minutes and then it idles well with the choke off. Once i get it out it hesitates at about 3/4 throttle. as the engine heats up the situation gets worse. it wants to stall at speed and under any load at all. if i pull in the clutch it stays running but just barely. there is also popping in the pipes when warm(i wouldnt call it lound enought to be a backfire). The timing is right on. Plugs are a little dark but not fouled.

I have never had a mikuni before and am a little intimadated. I am also running a boyer which i have never had before. I have been down all the checklist that i follow with my triumph and cant seem to figure it out (checked timing, cleaned air cleaner, made sure manifold isnt leaking, lubed autoadvance mechanism)

Do you have the insulating gaskets on the manifold? Stock manifolds have a gasket made of insulating material that is supposed to keep the heat transfer to the carbs down. On the face of it, it sounds like the the mikuni is getting hot.

It also sounds like it may not be jetted properly for your engine. I know there are several threads here that discuss settings for the mikuni.

Something you say makes no sense " lubed autoadvance mechanism"
That piece should have been long gone in a pile with your points. Please advise...

Brain fart on the autoadvance. i checked the advance on the boyer.

The gasket is there. Ill read the jetting threads and let you know.

If you bought a kit from a dealer for a Norton single carb conversion....
They come with a rich set up in general. If you did the Boyer install yourself? Did you check all your ground wires and even add a few? If not revisit the wiring. Do a search using the words Common ground.

bike is running great. found a loose ground and cleaned the carb. had a great ride yesterday

thanks for the help
