lucky enough to see him two years running 78/79 at the TT, and later eating Sunday lunch at a friend’s parents restaurant in Henley in Arden, Warwickshire.

After the bad smash in 1974 (Germany)
Hailwood briefly retired to New Zealand and was involved in the marine industry.... when the idea of coming back to the Isle of Man was brought up. against the advice of friends and family, Hailwood returned to the TT in 1978. Some thought Hailwood would do nothing more than tarnish his image. But he didn't....

I had a girlfriend once who said 'start as you intend to continue'. I think that is what Mike Hailwood did. Most of us start road racing riding converted road motorcycles - silly stuff ! A factory-built road racer is always better - it has usually been refined by other peoples' crashes. I helped getting Dunster's Manx ready for Mike to ride at Winton in the early '70s. - He made it look easy.
