Mercury ignition switch

Not owning a Mercury - tried to buy one, but the seller was having marital problems, on again off again - didn't the Mercury have that strange setup with only a speedo on one half of the clock holders, and the switch was in the other half of the clock holders. (an economy measure, so they could price it below a Commando ?).

Like many things Norton, the Mercury ocassionally bent the rules. Mine was supposed to have come in a small batch that were built up like the 650SS with chromed primary cover and chainguard, in black with a silver tank and a tachometer but kept the single carb. Brought in by Harry Firth the Ontario Distributor. Worntorn has a Mercury from the same batch. A friend of mine bought a Mercury from Firth's, brand new and says it had a blue tank not a gray one so who knows?

That's right, the club says it is a Mercury but the original owner told me he bought it new from the dealer as a twin Carb SS.
Mind you, if ordered as you describe , about the only thing needed to change those bikes from a Mercury into an SS would be the extra Carb. The dealer may have done that.

Harry Firth knew what would sell. Mine still has the single carb but in all other respects is a 650SS. My friend that bought the blue Mercury got it in the mid seventies as leftover stock that had been languishing in the back of the shop.

Lazyeye6 is to be congratulated......it is not often one sees a British bike with the front brake lever in the correct position.......
