I'm thinking I have a loose intake guide but I thought I'd describe symptoms and get your help.

When I first went through the engine I had an experienced classic bike shop do the head work. Guides, springs valves etc.
I checked receipt and oversize guides were fitted.
When I got the bike running it used oil and blew some smoke after warming up and giving some throttle. Not huge amount but noticable.
Mostly on right side.
I figured I hadn't honed properly and the rings weren't seating. I assumed head was good.
After a couple thousand miles of trying things and seeing if improved I gave up.

I put in new pistons/rings and gave what I think was a decent hone job.
Using about a quart of oil per 500 miles which is not good.
After 1200 miles I still have some smoke from the right side like before,
after warmed her up and after a fast idle of 1200-1500 if I hold throttle open It'll happen for a few seconds then go way.
I actually felt it was gradually improving.

However now I'm getting a metallic rattle at mid range rpms that sounds like more than the usual Norton rattle.
It fluctuates and is definitely coming from the engine and sounds like the top end.
When I came home I held the rottle open at about 3,000 rpm and smoked worse than I've seen lately and again from right side.

Since the metallic rattle is new and I'm getting more smoke does this sound like an intake guide.
Since it isn't there at all rpms I doubt if a valve is out of adjustment but I'll check.

I'm thinking my smoking from the start was a loose intake guide on the right side and the noise indicates it's getting worse. :(
Am I right on this.

TIA
Bob

Do not drive said vehicle. Pull head , inspect valve guides for looseness. Also, a good Snorter should rarely need pistons - rebore unless something rude has happened to motor of course. Let a competent shop do that rebore to supplied pistons if that is the way you want to find out smoking issues. Let them hone it as pat of the service.. Suspect valve guides first and foremost. Rattle not good.
