I would like to try a different master cylinder. I looked on ebay for existing master cylinders and found dozens of very cheap new ones. Has anyone tried them?
 
Make sure you get the hydraulic ratio (mechanical advantage) correct between the M/C and caliper, I seem to remember that someone posted a chart of the hydraulic ratios achievable for the various calipers.
 
Better to get the proper modified 13mm Norton front master cylinder from AN.

Forget about cheap eBay junk, you normally can't get replacement seals or pistons for them.
 
There is always the iron law "YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR".
How about using a master cylinder from a Japanese bike? Used of course, just for testing purposes. Must come from a bike with a single disc.
I am very unfamiliar with Japanese bikes. I need a donor from a bike with similar weight. Any suggestions? Are the banjo bolts the same diameter and thread? If so, I could use my existing brake line. I currently have a Brembo master cylinder which does not impress me. Too squashy.
 
Just spend the money and get a new one with the right size bore made for your bike, is your life worth it going cheap, a proper MC will improve your braking, after a major brake failed trying to fix old stock front brakes and injuries from it I went the full Gramica front brake system from RGM, at the time over 10 years now was the best brake set up for my Norton one finger braking if I want too and the bike stops very nicely, one of the best upgrades I ever done, as my life is worth it.
Lot of cheap junk on ebay.

If you want a known quality, the Royal Enfield Himalayan (411cc) master cylinder is 13mm, and you can buy repair kits for them.
 
Donning flame suit, but yeah, I tried one. A generic Chinese one that costs $15, look up Front Hand Brake Master Cylinder Parts Compatible with Honda ATV TRX 250EX 250X 300EX 300X 400EX 400X Repl.# 45510-HM3-901. It works fine, good feel, has a brake light switch. At $15 I'm not worried about replacement parts. It works fine.

i am rather surprised! The 13mm OEM item offered by A/N (or a similar retrofit by RGM) are going to be the best available for a “stock"
upgrade in appearance. Otherwise it’s a modified Norton. Nothing wrong with that if it is what one wants.
