Hi folks. I have a question about replacement Master Cylinders. When looking for one do we just need to find one the is around 13 MM ? Or do we need to know of the volume it moves too or anything else? Thanks.

Mostly all have similar bore length d/t human hand reach around level and distance to strike the grip. Smaller the bore the closer the lever gets to the grip, so if small enough bore may have to add material or adjuster to the lever not to foul grip to get full brake force applied. The size of the caliper also must be considered. Factory hydraulic ratio is ~17:1, moderns can hit up to 25-27:1. 13 mm move ratio up to ~19-20:1.

Just gotta put my 2 cents in on this. If you REALLY want excellent braking, and don't like the "wooden" feel of the OEM brakes; and you don't want your "sleeved" M/C "seizing" and giving you a "nasty surprise" ... then install a Nissin M/C with a braided steel hose. (they cost like $60 from mikesxs ... or even less on fleabay; and that's for brand spanking new ones ! :D Heck, you can even still use your original caliper and brake disc, I did and think they work great :D Liked it so much, I even installed one on my Triumph T140E (with a braided stainless steel brake hose of course) but it has the "angled" Nissin master cylinder to suit the Triumph's handlebars. (and it's silver colored instead of black.)

Just to give feed back on the small set screw i installed to shorten the stroke on the brake lever, (see pics in the thread)works fine under all conditions including the hot summer sun here in NZ.

Except it looks like a big box sitting on your handlebars.

You can't go wrong if you follow this: http://www.vintagebrake.com/mastercylinder.htm

Putting an improperly sized master cylinder, especially one from the modern two disc sport bikes, may not improve the brake performance on your Norton. I do know from experience if you stick to the 27:1 ratio you will be very, very pleased. Its all about size!

Any suggestions for a master cylinder which will still work and mount up with the Lucas switches? I certainly could use some added preformance from my front brake. Thanks

How does the Andover MC compare to a resleeved MC performance wise? I am also looking to upgrade brake performance and want to keep the original switchgear. I can live with a non stock MC. The price difference appears to be about $160 cdn in favour of a resleeve, if you add a SS hose to the resleeve kit to compare apples to apples. I also plan to add Ferado pads. From what I can gather the negative points for the resleeve is that some have experienced the locking on of the front brake in hot weather. Any other pros and cons?

I have the Andover Norton master cylinder. It is excellent, even when riding 2 up. A real noticable difference.

Master Cylinder Ugrade Bike # 2, as I had carried my MC all the way to Singapore in case I had an hour or two spare at work to do the upgrade, got to it yesterday .
Was drilling away happily and thought the drill felt a little 'griity' and noisey in the hole. All looked good, although the hole didn't look quite perfect at the bottom, I had made a jig and was in a drill press, so thought all was cool, tapped the top of the hole, but after inserting the RGM sleeve couldn't get it to pump up/prime to pressure, so took the sleeve out again, and after close inspection , decided to drill the hole out another 1 to 2mm with a flatter tipped drill bit before sealing in the sleeve.
Check ot what came out iof the hole!!!!
Any comments on this baby?
Regards Mike

It looks as if someone has repaired the cylinder with a standard bore size (5/8") sleeve?

Thanks LAB, yes now know that is the case, shame they went to all the trouble for the sake of an upgrade kit. I just hope the rest of the bike isn't the same way when I get to the internals!!!
