Mark II vs. Mark IIA

Early (late 1973) Mk2A's have the standard wide spindle and bushes with the fitting on the end cap disc and long through bolt same as the Mk1 and earlier bikes.
The narrow spindle, bushes Welch plug type got added in the early part of 1974.

Early Mk2A's (and Mk2's no doubt) do not have the cut out in the rear chain guard to get access to the rubber grommet in the rear brake plate for shoe wear checking.
A legislation added in the early part of 1974 (L.A.B posted information )

The balanced pipes that were on my Mk2a had the flat front sealing face and split collets so perhaps not original to the bike.

The MK1a pipes look to have flanged ends going into the head, if I took these off it would explain the need to get the spherical seats

Early Mk2As appear to have had the same recessed flanged balanced pipes as the Mk1A, parts 064202, LH and 064203 RH, however, they aren't listed in the Mk2/2A supplement and are not available from AN (or any other supplier as far as I'm aware).
Another difference the II swingarm spindle should have an oil zerk on the right side cap plus a small nut on the thin cap fixing through bolt, while IIA has no facility for adding oil, as it uses permanently oil soaked fiber wads and welch end caps.

As mentioned, the Mk2 (US model) and Mk2A (Euro model) were manufactured concurrently for different markets although some Mk2As were later sold on the US market, therefore, both early models had the 'zerk' (oil nipple) assembly and both later models had the sealed assembly and the sealed assembly parts aren't listed in the Mk2/2A supplement.
