Hello - I'm currently in the process of rebuilding a 1974 Norton Commando. Unfortunately, the case in my engine is cracked beyond repair, and I have come across a set of Mark III cases in good condition. Does anyone know if these cases can be used in place of my damaged cases? Is there any modifications that need to be done if it does work?

in simple terms NO. the primary case bolt pattern is different and the MK3 crank is wider.

75 e-start cases are different; fixing points for the primary, and the entire primary itself.

In slightly more complicated terms, it can be done. The main bearings will need shimming and you'll need to turn up an adapter ring to sit on the drive side crankcase, appropriately tapped to take the earlier inner chaincase.

It will never look quite 'standard' as the ring will always be visible but it's not too bad. I've got a set of MkIII cases which spent some time on a MKIIA and they can be easily converted back, simply needing the three extra holes plugging.

You could sell those MK3 cases, buy yourself a set of MK2 cases and still have money leftover for a trip to the Bahamas. Problem solved.
