So I fell into some play money so to make up for hauling a bike across the country, shipping countless boxes of parts and well, just putting up with me for all these years I got my brother a Maney belt drive.

I ordered it last Monday. I had emailed Steve and he was very prompt with responding. When I called an talked to him with the credit card info he was a hoot to chat with. What a great guy. I bet he has some great stories.

The package showed up today in NC. All I can say is for the £19 difference there is no way anyone should get a RGM belt drive. Just from the pictures the quality difference is astounding.

Compare this to the RGM one.

If you recall I had to shave the inner primary to clear the bolts on the back of the basket. Not a problem with the flush bolt head on the Maney.

I can't wait to hear how the install goes. I'm sure it will be flawless.

I just HAD to have a Maney-part on my bike so I got an oil-junction-block and when I got it I just gawked at it for a while, the finish is PERFECT, I love parts made by actual enthusiasts!!

Hi how much landed in the States, is there a big price difference between the RGM and Maney, as I am after a belt drive myself
Regards Mike

Have had that drive for about 6 years now ( beltdriveman approved) - on my bike runs great, easy to install, and no more dribble dribble on the floor. Belt still looks great after about 30K on it - i keep an extra in the tool cover just in case it chews it though

unsure why the photos Dave - they have them on Steve's web site - or were you going through a DT's sort of pic thing and had the need to click a few off?

Two years ago the RGM unit was £220 + £40 for shipping. They have gone up to £240 and I don't know what the shipping is. RGM is very responsive to emails so you can just inquire as to what shipping would be for you.

For the Maney the belt drive was £259 + £75 for shipping.

The exchange rate was more favorable back in 2010.

Even so you know which one I would recommend.

If you had provided nice big pictures and a good description of the Maney set up back in the day I might not have gotten the RGM unit.

How many teeth on the sprockets, front and rear, on the Maney unit?

I got this reply when I asked about gear ratio...it doesn't quite answer your question:

"Hi Russ
Using my belt drive will raise your overall gearing by approx 1 gearbox sprocket tooth. my advise is to put the belt drive on, try it then alter the gearing if you feel it necessary.

I have belt drives on stock.

Steve"

You're right!

Does that mean he can take it down to a 19 tooth ratio? I was tempting towards the Norvil because he advertises he can give you whatever ratio you want, but didn't know that about the Maney. I really don't want a 20 tooth ratio if I do it. I suppose I could call too.

Maney you can just email. Tell him that you like the configuration you have and he'll tell you which sprocket to use. You have to dive into the primary so changing the gearbox sprocket isn't that big of a deal.

Steve's standard street belt drive ratio it makes it seem like you have approx a "1 tooth" larger gearbox sprocket than what you actually have on the bike (so if you have a 19 makes it seem like a 20)

I have a 21 tooth on my bike - and its great for high freeway speeds etc etc - 70mph is under 4K

i found it to be a little over geared when i lived back east as spent a lot of time on smaller roads - sub 55-60 mph - so was almost always in 3rd

the change does make it a bit tougher to kick start it too - so if you struggle with your bike currently it will seem a little harder to kick over

fortunately i am 170 lbs of pure adrenaline fueled nitro-muscle (haha)

Maney's belt drive primary ratio is 1.84:1, whereas stock Commando is 2.19:1. This taller ratio speeds up the gearbox and thus reduces torque shock loads, something the JPN team implemented that helped them finish races.

i knew someone would have some numbers for it - nice kenny!

But I'm not racing, I'm cruising around these country roads where the speed limit is 45 and sometimes I get up to 60.

Dave, let's say currently you have a stock primary setup with a 26/57 primary sprocket tooth count (2.19 primary ratio), plus a 20 tooth countershaft and a 42 tooth rear wheel sprocket (2.1 final). That puts your overall gearing at 4.60:1 If you want to keep that same overall ratio with a Maney kit, you'd have a 38/70 tooth primary (1.842), which would require a 17 tooth countershaft sprocket with your 42 tooth rear (2.47 final) to get you close and put you at 4.55 overall ratio.

That's 3 teeth on the countershaft sprocket. I was surprised by this myself and double checked my math. But yes, 3 teeth smaller to get your overall gearing close to the same as stock.
