Mainshaft sleeve bearing question

Hi,

I would like to know how to remove the Mainshaft sleeve bearing. I dismantle the primary chainncase, the layshaft and the Mainshaft. The last gear is stuck with the sleeve bearing and don't know how to remove it to check it. Is a heating gun gonna help?

The sleeve gear should tap out of the bearing with a soft hammer.

The bearing should require some heat on the case to remove it.

Yup ,and don't neglect changing out the sleeve gear bushings, this is even more of a wear point. :|

Get your wife's hair dryer and lay it on the garage floor next to the tranny case and let it blow on high heat into the case for a few minutes. The case will soon get too hot to handle with your bare hands. Usually tapping it on a soft pine board will see the bearings drop out.

I like the hair dryer because it is a lot more gentle than a real heat gun and I don't want to chance warping or ruining any heat treat the case might have.

It is nice to take all the studs out of the case that hold the inner cover on, that way you can tap it on the board squarely and flat, and also it gives you a chance to debur the stud holes and check the case for flatness. If the case and inner cover face are both free of burrs and flat then usually you can put them together with the very thinnest application of silicone sealer and this helps get a jump on any shimming you need to do during reassembly.


Get some thin scrap assorted stainless sheet and the right size radio chassis punches and you can make some really nice looking shims if you need them.
