has anyone fit a Joe Hunt magneto to a Goldstar?

Available for a R GS but not a Goldie.

Why don't you have the Lucas one rebuilt?

A twin magneto would work on a single.

No doubt it would, but a single would have 360 degrees to make a big fat spark from the windings, whereas a twin 180 deg.

Not to mention a live HT cable flapping about pumping out 30000? Volts of sparks to give you a nasty shock that will have to go through your frame, and God help you if you get a fuel leak whilst riding along . . . . can I come along and watch?

You’re making stuff up, mate.
The magneto turning 360 degrees generates two low tension pulses, of opposite polarity. One can be used to create a spark, or both can be used to create two sparks, approximately 180 magneto degrees apart. The interval can be varied a bit, for a V-twin.

Not to mention a live HT cable flapping about pumping out 30000? Volts of sparks to give you a nasty shock that will have to go through your frame, and God help you if you get a fuel leak whilst riding along . . . . can I come along and watch?

This is a technical forum. That statement doesn’t belong here.

You can use a points cam with only one lobe. Then it becomes a single cylinder magneto.

Or you can short circuit the unwanted spark, from the HT pickup to the magneto case, with any old scrap of wire or metal strip.

A friend gave me a wader mag for the Goldstar, needs rebuilding. The platform the mag rests on was lightly skimmed 30 years ago by Neil Keene if anybody remembers him. Therefore the mag needs a shim. The bike had a magdyno originally and a PO had machined a hole and for a large bronze oil seal holder which was installed slightly off center, forever giving problems. I needed to remove the oil seal holder but did not want to pound on it so I took a piece of 3/8" alu plate 12" square and drilled the necessary holes to mount it to the timing side. Then locked it down on the mill table to remove the bronze flange and remove enough alu to make the back side parallel to the front side, about .040. I am going to come up with a way to bolt the mag to the platform to keep it in position and stop the wiggling it likes todo. I know I am not the only one who has fought the poor mounting of the mag problem. By the way, can anyone else use the plate I made? It was a lot of work for a one time use item.
