Hi Guys

I've just stripped my 1971 750 SS motor and have found it to have been rebuilt and still on std sizes (which is nice) but it has a Lunati camshaft in it.

I've never seen one from Lunati, so assume that the motor was rebuilt quite a few years ago. All of the internals are in really good condition, so I'd like to re-use the cam and followers. I've searched the Forum for Lunati, but came back empty.

Does anyone have any knowledge of the cam (if it's a performance item or not) and what valve clearances I should be using when it's back together?

Any info would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Rich.

Ask Lunati? they seem to be still in business www.lunatipower.com

Although duration requires a more involved process, lift is easily attainable with a digital caliper or a 0 to1 and a 1 to 2 micrometer. Subtract the main radius from the overall dimension with the lobe. This may give you a general idea to the nature of the cam. Compare your data with known numbers to see where your cam falls.

Tappet clearance can be tuned by ear sometimes. If the cam appears to be close to a stock in lift, I might start a little loose, say 10 and 12 respectively.

If the cam measures to be somewhat radical in nature, then duration maybe needed to determine proper clearance. Some hot cams have been known to be anywhere from .005 on up to .015 and beyond. Valve clash and piston clearance along with cam timing are all conciderations.

Photos please.
Is there any other markings on the cam? You should contact Lunati for specs.

Hi Guys

Thanks for the replies - very helpful, especially about how to determine the overall lift. From measuring the cam, it comes out as 0.894" dia with a total lobe height of 1.219", which, if I'm doing this correctly equals 0.325" total lift.

To add some detail, the Lunati camshaft has what appears to be X 232.106 engraved on the breather side end. I'm guessing that this is 106 lobe separation and 232 deg duration.

I've had a look at the specs from my 920cc PW3 cam (as bought from Mick Hemmings) to compare, but the specs for that cam don't seem to be directly comparable at 312 deg (inlet and exhaust, as measured at the valves) and 0.145" lift at TDC (inlet).

Previously, I did look on the Lunati website, but there is no longer any listing for Norton - just for something called an H-D...

Confused of Melbourne!

Triton, not putting details on the website only means they don't do the cams now, most likely they have recordsa dn can tell you more about it, probably including what it was copied from ;-)

Is the total lift measurement that of both exhaust and intake? Check to see if the inake is a little higher, say .335ish. If so, that may indacate a stock cam, in lift anyway.
