Does anyone have an original headlamp shell with a 35mm diameter grommet hole in it? we have looked at all ours here and can't find one. We have been told that the 35mm hole is correct and was the size used on the original headlamp shells, can anyone confirm?

On the early headlamp shells that were equipped with an ammeter, the grommet hole size that I measure is about 36mm in diameter. On the later Commando's without the ammeter hole but with the 3 indicator lamps, I measure the grommet hole to be 40mm in diameter. These hole diameters that I measure are from original Lucas headlamp shells. I hope this helps,

The parts manual for 1968-70 isn't that helpful on this point, although it gives you a part number for the grommet and shell. The Andover site is more helpful showing you an illustration and part number:
The 1968-70 grommet part number is 06-8042
Looks like Andover supplies the same grommet for the later years of headlamps as well.

I have just looked at a Lucas SS700P headlight shell and it has 3of 40mm holes in the underside. I am reasonably sure it is (was) a Commando part, it has 3of warning light holes and a toggle switch hole in the top.

That's a later type headlamp assembly as the original headlamp had an ammeter, toggle switch and one warning light (red for high beam).

Of the two old h/lamp shells ive got both have 36mm grommet holes, ammeters and one indicator lamp and switch hole and the other two indicator lamp holes. Both stamped Lucas S 700P

Thanks for the above, it is mirroring what we are slowly finding out here that there seems to be a mix in the past.
