I remember the washers on the lower shock bolts were different than most other washers. After a thorough looking I made this list of how they may work.

bottom bolt 06.0463 2 - 3/8"x24x1-1/2" mine is 1 3/4" with nylocks and the left side has a thin head for the chain guard.
bottom washer inside 2 - 23298 3/8"
bottom washer outside 2 - 22636 3/8"x1"x3/32"

I put some thick washers on the inside of the bolts but outside the swing arm to keep the shock away from the mudguard, but no where can I find the thickness of 23298 nor the diameter. I don't see the need for a 3/32" thick washer on the outside, much less a 1" dia. but so what.

Can anyone clue me in on the inner washer? Or does it really matter?

All's I know is that road loads try to pry the lower shock mount off to the outside so needs enough back up washer to prevent that. Inside don't need as much, just to keep rubber bulge from rubbing.

You will have noticed that the inside edge of the steel ring that is welded to the end of the damper - the part that holds the rubber bushing - is heavily chamfered. IMO, the outside washer should have an OD that is just slightly greater than the ID of that steel ring that holds the rubber bushing. That way it will buttress the rubber bushing, prevent the rubber bushing from ever disconnecting from the shock, but never touch the outer ring. That way the rubber bushing can float and do its job. And it should go without saying that the rubber bushing's inner steel bushing should also be free to rotate - on the bolt that goes through the swing arm plate - as the swing arm rises and falls.

Pretty sure the nuts were not nyloc, and only a sturdy wash on the outside only. That was what was on my bike, and I believe that was original. I use loctite and worked fine for 10K miles. I have replaced the shocks with Hagon's.

Cheers Richard

Reviving old thread with question:
Which is correct? The 1971 & 1973 Parts manuals I have both show the lower shock mount washers as #37 (NM22636) on the inside next to the bolt head, and #38 (NM23298) on the outside next to the nut. The Andover Norton online parts drawing show these reversed, #38 on the inside and #37 on the outside.

The large diameter NM22636 washer should always be fitted on the outside to prevent the shock eye from slipping off the rubber suspension bush.

Thanks. That makes sense. So AN corrected the printed parts books. Btw, the part I received from AN for #37 is numbered 06.7808, not 22636, but it is the larger diameter washer.

I expect so.
If you look at the various brochure pics where the lower mount is visible then the large washer is on the outside.

Yes, 06.7808 is the later part number for NM22636.

The washer on the outside must be big enough so the metal of the shock cannot slip off the rubber insert. Those inserts are simply pushed in.
