Depends if you are referring to the '850 F1xxxxx' number stamped on the frame headstock or the number on the certification plate?

like I said though sometimes the "F" # will match the rest and sometimes not
 
I'm out...313XXX frame number and not a Roadster at birth (HiRider).

It would be interesting to see a photo of that number if it's stamped on the actual headstock (with the last two or three numbers blanked out)

Does it follow the usual format of *850*313xxx* where (*) is the NVT three lines in a circle stamp?
'F' or 'no F'?

333988 is an 850 Mk3 (Edit: A late Mk3) and which is what I said: "For 1973, 1974 and early 1975 the frame and plate numbers don't match." so no argument there, my 850 Mk3 has matching frame and plate numbers but Staytite was referring to his 1974 model having non-matching numbers.

Ya, I guess I should have clarified the plate number, which matches engine and gearbox casing numbers on my bike. Hadn't really noted the headtube stamping was different until now....Does it tell us anything relevant to bike's providence?

It seems to roughly tie in with dynodave's plate-frame number list so there's nothing suspicious as far as I can tell.

A MKII of friend of mine is 33595X and the VIN is marked 77 (the year)???
