I'm not sure how long it took N-V to recognise a problem with the front brake. I'd mentioned it a couple of times when I was riding the prototypes on test. I found that, once the brake linings were touching the drum, you could keep adding pressure to the brake lever and seeing travel of it without any change on braking effect. My take was that the lever wasn't strong eough and was distorting as the applied force got greater. There was talk of a redesign, but I don't know when (or if?) it got resolved. Once production of the Commando got going at Plumstead Road, the Wolverhampton R&D didn't see Commandos again very often.

IIRC, the brakes were sourced from Italy, but I don't know who the manufacturer was or whether the handle-bar lever was part of the out-sourced system.

Thought I'd do lil' update here. Not to keen on doing the whole "rebuild thread" thing so now waiting on a few bits n pieces before fireup. (excuse the dust n pollen! lol!)

The exhaust cleaned up and so did the rims. Well good enough for 5-50. (5 ft away or 50 mph) I couldn't save the headlight shell and mounts. Front fender has most of the dent removed but still kind'a funky. Full rebuild on hubs, brakes, carbs, blaaa blaaa blaaa. Got to find the 06-4137 throttle cable but the one on there will suffice for now. The Doherty throttle inner sleeve crapped out so got to deal with that. Still haven't figured out why the charge light doesn't come on. (did trouble shoot but no joy) Prob look into the ICM assimilator deal and still can't find my left side seat knob. LOL! (I think it went bouncing down the road when I hauled the bike home) Had to replace the center stand with the 850 version, the original was a hot sick mess of bugger welds, cracks, bolts and bailing wire. Just received the bezels and glass for the gauges today! yeaaaa!
