Anyone got any ideas on how to remove the pistons from the caliper intact - they are not totally seized in, but very stiff after a few years out of use?

Soak well in penetrant for several days, then dump in a pot of boiling water and let sit for about 2 minutes.

Wrap in a towel and give the lump a smart rap on a soft wood board; one side, remove loose puck, then the other side, remove 2nd puck.

another trick is to replace the bleed nipple with a grease nipple /zerk and pump out with grease gun, hold the first one that moves to get the next one moving, the one in the fixed side is hardest to remove, so make sure it moves before the one behind the cover.
Cheers Richard

Thanks grandpaul- that will be my first line of attack. I had the pistons made in SS, so i don't want to trash them (or I would just drill tap and pull them)

Excellent! especially to know I am not missing something simple about this excersise! Some good ideas and one contingency (the bolt)

I also broke the nipple as it sheared in the hole, so I need to remove that too, but nonethelss this is the only plan b I think.

Have a look at the technical articles on the Old Brits website(http://www.oldbrits.com) under commando caliper rebuild. There are some good hints on how to remove seized pistons
