Lockheed caliper cap alternatives? Wax or Grease it!

Re: Lockheed caliper cap alternatives?

I'm hoping to solve the cap w/o bulldozer robust tools, which that wimpy caliper device would not stand a chance unless back up plate welded between legs and beef up the peg holders. May photo my skewed hard pins and its tool holes to see how they simply ozed but not at all buggered up like the really ovaled example shown. i guess my only solution is better anti-seize so maybe someone can point way at it...

I have a problem with anti seize on brake fittings. It MAY be oil based and in a closed glycol fluid brake system, any type of oil based product is considered a potential problem for the seals and o-rings. The problem lies not necessarily with initial assembly but mostly with disassembly then reassembly when you can't do a perfect cleaning(it's almost impossible to even wipe it off your hands) and end up contaminating the fluid. You, as pointed out above, are probably over tightening the fittings and/or have a poor flare. As far as using tape - on any NPT (pipe thread) fittings you can use tape if there is no flare, but leave 2 threads clear.

Re: Lockheed caliper cap alternatives?

I've reviewed a handfull of brake fitting anti-sieze discussions to see axle grease or toilet bowl wax works a treat so maybe just auto polish wax would do as well. Avoid getting inside system of course.

I see SS versions but shudder at risk of thread galling bind as brake sovent pressure weeps away normal anti-seize.

Just get the SS cap and be done. Galling is a non issue when used in an aluminum body.

If you are worried, a little candle wax on the threads will sufficiently lube the threads.

Re: Lockheed caliper cap alternatives?

Peel's steel cap and original holes still good enough to use so I see no point in SS but for the bling. I use candles to ease old sliding door and drive long screws in tough wood and have melted wax into big rusted threads so glad to read its good on brake cap in alloy threads. If I ever get Trixie's cap off I'll try the candle on hers and see how it goes. Seems if threads were not so tough to me an Ally cap would work and polish up nice.

Re: Lockheed caliper cap alternatives?

Hi Hobot, I like the comment where someone has threaded the holes on the cap and fitted screws. I would suggest modifying this method by drilling a piece of steel bar [ square or something like that ] in order for the bolts to be tightened into the cap and not be wrenched out when putting pressure on from unscrewing. That way, a large crescent spanner could be applied to the bar and then turn the cap out.

Hope the idea has got across ok.

Re: Lockheed caliper cap alternatives?

Yep Sir I definitely noted and saluted the screwed in peg method but have acquired some expertise in removing fused fasteners so if I hadn't been able to remove Peel's with frying pan oil burning hot caliper and dry ice on cap with body and bench damaging forces I'd of had a big nut welded on and waited 30 sec and twisted out with just a gloved hand. Dramatic methods is what I want to avoid . Trixie my 2nd Combat was almost as bad 1st time and I couldn't get her's off last season on forks w/o risking hole damage so put it off until I'm in meaner mood to take it out on something deserving. Nortons make me feel the most incompetent routinely adding to my basic distaste being a mechanic. If not so cute should be a bounty on em.

Re: Lockheed caliper cap alternatives?

Steve, for want a of a better term or terminolgy, I definitely am of the opinion you have a tendency to over think basic engineering principles, looking after Nortons is not that hard regardless of riding skills!!!

Lockheed caliper cap alternatives? WAX ANTI-SEIZE!

Ugh piloting THE Gravel tore me a few new one's and still does & so does attempting mechanics on old Commandos. Pre-Peel required my own methods in several major items after all the ordinary advice from 3 forums members failed to solve level of stuck froozen bent and bound up cases, swing arm spindle, fork nuts and caliper cap. I fear I'd not be able to remove the turning stud plugs after a couple years with silvery anti-seize so its not a path I'd attempt over just trashing the cap by welding on it. I refuse to force myself into injury levels again just being a mechanic. IT IS Only tri-links and isolastics and grip of skinny tires that keep me interested in otherwise crappy ole Commandos.
