Hi There,

More than likely discussed before but... I'm having trouble fitting the clutch locating circlip ( 06-0752 ) to fit snug in the clutch location spacer ( 06-0747 ) om My MK2 850.
When it's slid along the shaft and located in the groove it's becoming distorted and won't fit into the spacer .
I've read somewhere that the use of the mk3 starter idler circlip ( 06-8072 ) smoothed down is a better option as it is stronger and doesn't slop around in the groove on the shaft, but I've tried this also and are having no luck getting it to fit either .

Is there a trick to getting the circlip to fit correctly in the spacer ? do I need to replace the spacer also when fitting a new circlip ? Any help appreciated !

Cheers Hendo

Never heard of that fitting prob . Could be the ( new , never reuse one ) circlip is not tapped home into it's thin slot well enough .
I use the 06-8072 , it has to be thinned a bit on a flat surface with emery paper but then it slides tightly over the shaft , hopefully home into the mainshaft slot with work . You want it to be a tight fit and fully home . Try not to bend or twist it about . The goal is no slop or looseness .
The recess of the spacer accomadates the circlip obviously .

Thanks, I too thinned 06-8072 down on a stone but still no luck fitting, so tried using 06-0752 but no luck either. The old circlip that I removed showed wear marks on it .

I have never had a circlip that was too thick to fit in the groove but there's always a first time. Perhaps the circlip is getting distorted trying to fit it over the splines? AN makes a tapered tool to make it easy to fit the circlip. 13.1934

Your old circlip likely showed CRUSH marks on it , not wear , soft metal and never re-use it . Buy multiple main shaft circlips at a time .
Yes , Andover has a recent tool for sliding / fitting it , next order . I believe 06-8072 is a better option , but it takes time and patience to reduce it's thickness to tap home then tap with a small punch tightly into the m/s slot . Abort and try reducing thickness again if it doesn't tap home with minimal tapping to achieve that . Best as a winter project indoors .

Be very careful to clean the slot of swarf and dirt. A dental pick is ideal to remove this.

Thanks Torotonian, tool looks like the easiest way to go, although from Andovernorton shipping is eye watering to NZ ,and Winter is defintely here -3 C to -5 C start to the mornings with frosts .......

Yes shipping now eye watering , so now I compile a list as big as possible to cover all present and future needs and wants to justify . Had 2 amazing rides today with the wife on back . She loved it .

Never discount the possibility the new part is the wrong size.
By now, you should be measuring everything. Groove width, diameter on the shaft, as well as the circlip dimensions.

Quick note, bike all back together, test road over the weekend on a chilly winter's day bike went well no prob's.... the 21 tooth front sprocket change from the 20 is taking a bit to get used too , great for cruising but has lost a bit of it's zippyness ! first impressions are that I prefer the 20 ,but will ride out the summer season ( when it arrives ) and decide then .

It all depends on your driving style / needs for acceleration or if you drive touring style . The 21 T. gives me best of both options .

Also, do not over torque the main shaft nut. Book spec is 70ftlbs, too high and will distort, break the circlip according to OldBrits tech notes. Their recommendation is 35-40 plus locktite.

What did you end up doing to make it work out for you?
Russ
Hi Russ, I was trying to fit the mk3 starter idler clip 06-8072 in place of the clutch locating circlip 06-0747 as it apparently it fit's better and is stronger but after filing it down on a stone to fit in groove Still couldn't get it to fit in the spacer. Impatient as I am ;) I just fitted the correct locating circlip and off I went. ( next time I'll persevere and re-fit 06-8072 but I wanted the bike back together to get some rides in before I can't due to work )
As Torando mentioned I torqued the mainshaft nut to 40ftIbs with blue loctite

Don't give up on the stronger clip . It does not " fit better " from go , it must be thinned using a flat surface , emery cloth and working in a circular motion to achieve the thinness required . Torque less , once home in the thin main shaft slot .

I wish I had a pic for you, but if you take a dime, 10 cent piece USD, and glue it to a block of wood. The thicker circlip fits around this perfectly, you can then sand it to the desired thickness. Maybe 10 cent Canadian works too?

The bottom line is it holds the circlip while sanding it down and you will still have skin left on your fingertips when done.:)

Thanks Guys, will do but will now leave till next winter....unless I have to go back into the primary for a reason ;)
