I just purchased a Norton 750 Commando and looking at the manuals I see 2 controls for the headlight, one on the headlight that switches from high to low beam and another on the left side of the handlebar, it is a sliding control but seems to do the same thing as the switch. Is this correct?

Also I have 2 manuals see pic, one is an original called "750 commando owners manual", the other I downloaded from the web it is labeled "Commando 850 and 750 Riders Manual. As you can see they list controls of different sides. The bike I have is a 1971 750 Commando and I'm located in New York so maybe one is USA and the other UK?

The sliding light control is after market I think .... should be a Lucas switch on both bars ....my lights and horn are on left bar .... I turfed my original headlight bucket and have no toggle on it ... but I believe it was used for on/off can't remember .... some one will though stay tuned ...

Welcome  The one on the headlight bucket should not be wired as a dimmer switch, but rather just on/off.
The switch on your bar is some universal fit aftermarket lump, so all the wiring is to be examined, set back to standard.
As for which side the switches belong/came on, lotta speculation, but they are able to be wired either way.

The headlamp toggle switch is either going to be the OFF-PILOT-HEADLAMP "lighting selection switch" for a pre-71 and perhaps also some early '71 models, or, later, headlamp only ON-OFF.
The handlebar switch cluster shown in the photo is the "Wipac Triconsul" switch used pre-71 and maybe early '71 (not aftermarket as has been suggested). The sliding switch is the "high-low" beam selector or "dipswitch". The push buttons are for "headlamp flash", and "horn".

These early Commandos only had the single Triconsul switch cluster on the left side of the handlebar. If your Commando's electrical system conforms to the "early" layout (see pre-71 wiring diagram in the factory manual, section J, Fig. J9) then neither of the two rider's handbook control layout diagrams are entirely correct for your model.

No, simply different year models. Later models had two Lucas 169SA switch clusters (layout shown in the rider's manual on the right). These clusters were swapped over later on (layout then as shown in the rider's manual on the left).
