Hi everyone.

Does anyone please have a cure for leaky fuel taps?
My problem is that they also seem to be "awkardly tight" to turn on and off.
The main problem seems to be internally... with the brass conical barrel which is non- sealed.
I am thinking that this item needs to be finely lapped together ( perhaps with a very fine metal polish) as to mate with the internal body, to create a leak proof seal????

I think these fuel taps are non genuine!

Thanks,

Brewer.

If you don't mind non originality get hold of the BAP taps as used on late model classic Trumpets. They don't leak, are not expensive and flow plenty of fuel.

You can lap them in and sometimes it works.

Most taps have a circlip that holds them together. Just pop that off and they fall apart. I lap them in with a metal polish paste called Solvol.

Ok! thanks guys. I will lap them in again and hope that stops the "annoying" fuel leaks.........
If not , I will look into buying the Triumph items.

I have several pairs of the repro metal shaft fuel taps that I got for about $25-30 a pair on ebay. I remove the snap ring and lube the seal with silicone grease (available from NAPA) every year. No problems.

The BAP petcocks are big and ugly and also will develop the same "annoying" sticking problem. (So annoying that they flew across the garage right into the trash. That was very satisfying. )

The taps that came with my bike seem original, and the petcock portion seems to be some sort of whitish plastic, harder than nylon, maybe a phenolic resin. I cleaned them really well, but they started weeping. I got the Emgo copies with the rubber sleeve seal that fits between the petcock and the housing, but they don't flow worth a darn, and the ethanol started swelling the rubber within a month. Put the originals back on after another careful cleaning, and no more problems, knock wood.

Go to custom parts...scroll down.... Leak Proof Petcocks
These are the best on the market that I have found. Comes with all the seal washers and nuts. Choose Reserve and Main.
Not original looking but a very good mod. Fits your Original thread in your Commando tank. Cheers

I have two sets of these and they are really nice.

They ARE nice. Be aware that they don't play nice with Keihin FCR carbs - I destroyed one that way - they interfere with one another, and the FCRs actually killed the right-side petcock. Put a hole in it through touching/vibration.

Never had a problem with BAP's, have them fitted to a B44 and a commando for over 20 years, other than the zinc plating tarnishing no issues.

Make your own from a pair of 1/4 BSP ball valves male to female they start from £1.50p each and they come in anything from chrome plated or stainless steel. You'll also need two 1/4 to 1/4 male brass connectors into which you can solder the filter gauze and the main supply level tube taken from the useless standard cock.

They last for ever and never ever leak, mine are now 14 years old.

+1 for BAPs. I have them on both of my Nortons and have had no problems with them. I use stat-o-seal washers instead of the fiber washers and have no leakage. I found the fiber washers didn't seal very well on my fiberglass tank.

The OEM-style petcocks that came on my 750 were leaking badly, so I first bought new Asian-made OEM replicas. They only lasted two weeks. The seals they used were not compatible with ethanol fuel.

The original BAP taps were all metal. I have since seen them with plastic levers. The originals seem to go on for ever. 20 years plus. I don't find them big and ugly.

I also have late Triumph footrest rubbers (In my defence, I had a pair left over from a Benelli before I found out they were also a Triumph part).

I second (or third, or fourth) the vote for BAP taps. I have them on several bikes and they don't leak. I also don't mind the look of them at all.

Hi 79x100.
Those "BAP" fuel taps look fine on your bike. And no leaks!!!!
I am now convinced to go out and and buy a pair for my 850 Commando.

Thanks very much "everybody".

Brewer.
