Thanks everyone but I have a new problem,

My right hand carburetor is leaking. It doesn't appear to be coming from the pet cock but from the carburetor itself.

I run standard twin Amal r300 932s.

There is a real puddle of fuel under the bike after not riding it for about 3 weeks and I have been told it could be a sticking needle but am not sure. I have never pulled a carb apart before.

The fuel taps are turned off. Any ideas on what I should do?

thanks

Frank

With the taps OFF there should be no supply to the carbs at all. Sometimes the source of the leak is not so obvious and a wad of tissue is a helpful aid for detecting the source. Try around where the tap screws into the tank and even the tank underside in case it has a leak. If you're sure the leak isn't before the tap, then one of the taps must be passing fuel when its off. Undo the hose at the bottom of the tap and then you'll be able to see if the tap is passing fuel when its off.
Only other thing it can be if all the above is OK would be a leaking fuel bowl on the carb. Causes would be bad gasket seal on the float bowl top side or bad seal on the drain plug or the fuel inlet.
Hope that helps
David

I rebuilt the 932s on my 73 850 project. Boiled the main parts in water and Pine-Sol and got the rebuild kit with new float, needle valve, needle, air screw, throttle screw, o-rings and gasket. Strapped it all on and when the tank went on and fuel went in I got a leak. Mechanic said that my float bowls were warped. I took the bowls back home, put them on the granite countertop and sure enough they tipped side-to-side. Got some 400 grit sandpaper, wet it and slid the bowl around on top of it. After a few cycles of that I had the bowls lying perfectly flat on top of the granite countertop. Mounted back up and no leaks now.

I'm going to say your 'closed' petcocks are still passing fuel. A Norton that's on the side stand may have a fuel level in the carbs that is above the float bowl gasket line on the left side of each carb but would only leak down to that joint. Would not be enough to puddle. Float bowl drain plug of course could leak no matter which stand was in use. In either case though the carbs do not hold enough fuel to show a puddle after 3 weeks. Just the contents of the carbs would evaporate in 15 min or so. If the gas is definitely dripping from the carbs, after 3 weeks you have a petcock that isn't shut off plus a float valve that's not sealing.
