When shimming the layshaft after installing the roller bearing, I like most use iso shims. These are a bit of a pain as the ID is a tiny bit small. I ran out of them and rather than buy new I went looking for something better and found it a McMaster-Carr. They are a bit expensive but fit perfectly. The gearbox I just finished ended up with .004" with one .010" and one .005" shim so I took the .005" out and ended up at .009" once the inner cover was fully torqued.
They have lots of sizes, but these are the three I bought.
