Thanks to this forum giving me paranoia about the suspect layshaft bearing, I decided to change mine yesterday, bike is Mk 111 and one owner (cept me ) 13,000 miles and molycoddled.
Short diagnosis - the bearing was knackered and ready to disintigrate, replaced with a superblend and all is fine, it's been 25 years at least since I took a Commando gearbox apart but the whole job went well. so, :- if you have a bike around this mileage , do yourself a favour and change the bearing.

Did you use one of the rebuild kits from RGM or Andover Norton ?

No, all I did was replace the bearing, return spring, gaskets and seals , everything else was in excellent order.
