kickstarter pawl? yes it was, but now......

kickstarter sometimes catches and I am able to kick it through....sometimes it just kicks straight through with only the ratchet sound...I think it is the kickstart pawl gone bad, but any other ideas before I embark on removing the gearbox covers?

Very likely to be a worn pawl, but also check the stop plates inside the inner cover, and other pawl parts (spring and pin) and ratchet teeth inside the first gear pinion. Check the area around the kick start shaft pawl mechanism for hairline cracks.
 
it was the Pawl.....but now........

so the pawl was gone as they usually do.......and I replaced the kickstarter shaft for good measure as I wasn't too happy with the condition of the splines. however now the mainshaft nut which looked as if it had been off and on a few times needs to be replaced. the manual says 70ft/lbs......i thought that it was a lot so I started with 50ft/lbs and then the threads started to strip. i decided to stop and carefully remove the broken threads as it sits right on the mainshaft bearing....the thread on the mainshaft are fine and no broken threads from the nut fell into the bearing....so does anyone think that 70ft/lbs is a bit much? if so, what torque setting should I use? what about using a lower setting and use a dab of loctite?

You must have the Haynes manual?

Which appears to give the clutch end mainshaft nut torque figure of 70 ft lb (which many still consider to be too high) for the timing side nut torque figure.

The factory manuals say = 40/50 ft lb.

Actually, I have a factory workshop manual and it says 70ft/lbs. section D10 step 8.

man oh man, that is strange, but it is a 1973 copyright (I never bothered to look before) and my bike is a '74.

Yes it does, doesn't it, I hadn't noticed that.

But look at the torque figure listed in the Technical Data Torque Settings (section A) = "Mainshaft nut: 480 in./lb. 40/50 ft./lb. (5.50 Kg/m)"
480 in/lb = 40 ft lb, so why such an exacting in/lb figure, and such a broad ft/lb figure (40/50) was given I'm not sure, but 40 would seem adequate especially as you have discovered the nut thread starts to strip beyond 50 ft/lb.


The 065146 manual is generally OK to use for the '74 models. I'm not exactly sure there actually was a *'74* factory manual? Norvil do not appear to list one: http://www.norvilmotorcycle.co.uk/publicat.htm

well, I'll be a son of a gun. there are two separate and different torque settings for the same part.

I use blue Loctite and torque to 40 ft/lbs.
